I've been so busy the last 5 days that I missed this completely.

RALEIGH — Student athletes at North Carolina's public universities can join the same union as state employees.

The State Employees Association of North Carolina's decision affects all schools in the UNC System, including ACC Powerhouses UNC and NC State.

The decision gives athletes the choice to join the union without a team vote, but it's unclear if the invitation extends beyond scholarship athletes.

Collective bargaining is banned by law for all state and local level municipal employees in NC. Has been since the 50's.

SEANC is affiliated with SEIU, but they have zero collective bargaining power for anyone.

Sad, and I've never forgiven the fact that as Democrats we could have changed that but we didn't have enough labor supporters to do it even when we had the Governors office and the legislature.

If Duke was a state school they couldn't.

Read here for some background on this shame:

But in the end SEANC is just little more than a professional organization for state employees.

Granted, they are well positioned to bring all state employees into SEIU representation should we ever get this racist anti-union law repealed.

They have a PAC that is running good ads already for the Senate race and they do good work, but I can't call any body without collective bargaining authority a union. That's the same nonsense the repunks here do claiming the "teachers union" is to blame for the state of education here, when the NCAE is a strictly voluntary association with
