I'd like to understand why there were schools in Texas that made-up snow days on Memorial Day

I was chatting with my friend from Houston. I didn't realize there were some major tornado watches down in that area (I hope DUers in that area are safe). She was then telling me her nephew wasn't getting out of school until late because of the Tornado watch (figured it was safer to keep the kids in school than to send them home - that makes sense).

Until it dawned on me - today is Memorial Day. This is suppose to be a solemn day of remembrance for our brave soldiers who gave their lives to defend our nation.

Mind you I live up north here so making up snow days is a common thing since well, we get alot of snow up North. But never EVER once have any of us ever lost Memorial Day Monday to makeup a snow-day. I guess to us this day is important to keep and better to keep the kids an extra day at the end of the school year than to make them come in on Memorial Day.

I'd like to know what dumbass in Texas decided the best way for their kids to make up a school day was to take away Memorial Day from not just the kids but the families too. I asked my friend how many snow days did they had (which technically for them was ice days) and she's like oh 3-4. Really? The school districts couldn't find 3 or 4 other days to make up the school days OTHER than Memorial Day? Hell up here in Delaware I think they had about THREE WEEKS to make up yet our kids still had off for Memorial Day (the school districts decided to add extra 15 minutes onto the school day to help make up some of the time.).

Sorry didn't mean to rant but I still don't get it. I could see if this was any other day but come on - it's Memorial Day - have some respect for the people who served this country!

I'm becoming one more and more every day. I just don't want to leave the house. Some of it's that I'm just depressed.

I just don't feel I relate to anyone around my area anymore. I've tried but nothing "pings", which makes me feel sad and in turn not want to leave the house, unless it involves work or my child.

My brother's apartment. I checked the radar and we were under a purple blob. My brother went outside the hospital anf there was a tornado coming down from a funnel cloud but it didn't touch down until the next town on US 59. Most of the storms were heading towards the southeast, but this particular storm was heading northeast. I'm riding my bike around town, but haven't seen any damage.

we aren't used to missing days for snow or ice. My district lost 9 days of which we had to make up four. One of our make up days is this Saturday so we could still have Memorial day off. We couldn't add days at the end of the school year due to state law making us end school by June 12th our last day. We took all the work days save one which teachers need to finish grades. We took all the hours of early release and we added that Saturday.

during the summer and they got much needed breaks during the school year when they were feeling burned out. My son gets out of school in about two more weeks. It does suck that schools can't afford air conditioning, but then again schools can't afford anything anymore. Sad situation all the around.

When I grew up in New Jersey, we started after Labor Day, had one week off at Christmas, had a winter vacation in February, a spring vacation in April and got out towards the end of June. In Texas, where I taught for 33 years, we started in August, had two weeks at Christmas, spring break in March and got out the last week in May. Schools should be year round, especially now that most parents work (I used to walk home for lunch with my mother everyday in elementary school). Schools should be open from 7:00 - 6:00 and there should be no homework. I will have a lot to do when I become Empress of the Universe.

School districts should start building in extra days on the schedule to attend school if needed. They could have multiple one-day holidays if they aren't needed.

they put in two snow days every year. they did not use one, so they got friday off for their snow day.

they have to make up time somehow.

two years ago, they had the kids go to school on labor day. that did not fly with the parents and only lasted that one year.

The only reason I can think of is schools don't all have air conditioning and they'd rather make up their days on holidays and vaction days in May rather than wait till June in 100 degree weather.

Not a good reason, though.

...such as everybody working 30-40 hours a week tops full time and having many more people working, as opposed to 12% real national unemployment and working 50-70 hours a week full time and dying and watching our lives, health and families fail.

But all or nothing thinking stinks up even this board in all matters. So back to it tomorrow. Chop chop!

the only exception I can think of, and this is rare, is Graduation day for High School seniors. But even then, its usually scheduled at least a week after the school year is supposed to end, so we would have had to have missed at least 5 days due to weather before schedules start to conflict.

We have never made up snow days on any Federal or State recognized holiday, as far as I can remember.

There may also be conflicts with summer programs, or with previously scheduled events like graduation.

Education is actually more important than State-As-Religion displays of civic piety.
