As a backlash grows, open-carry groups in Texas beat a retreat.
Mark Follman on Tue. May 27, 2014 6:00 AM PDT
It would be an understatement to say that the tactics of gun rights activists have been backfiring of late. The showdown has taken place foremost in Texas, where in recent months groups such as Open Carry Texas have conducted provocative demonstrations in which armed men exercise their right under state law to carry semi-automatic rilfes in public. No fewer than five national food and beverage chains have now told them to get rid of their guns or get lost, including Starbucks, Wendys, Applebees, Jack In The Box, and Chipotle.
And now Chili's and Sonic have effectively joined the list: Two videos posted on YouTube on May 19 by the San Antonio chapter of Open Carry Texassince removed from public view but obtained by Mother Jonesshow its armed members being refused service at both restaurants. The two companies have not made official statements on open carry but have since indicated that they are reviewing their policies. From the nervous and angry reactions of some patrons to comments from some of the gun activists themselves, it's not difficult to see why these spectacles haven't been winning many people over.
When a young woman approaches the group in Chili's and expresses her dismay, a guy with an assault rifle strapped across his back offers her a flier. "Um actually, there's children here," she replies, "and you're a dumbass." As she walks away one member of the group comments mockingly, "Yes, I'm a dumbass," and then says of her, "must be Moms Demand Action," referring to the national gun-reform group.
Open Carry Texas' hostility toward Moms, which has pressured corporations over the demonstrations using social media campaigns, has been displayed in more disturbing ways. As I detailed in a recent investigation, members of Open Carry Texas have been involved in harassment, bullying and degradation of women.
In the Sonic video, as the thwarted gun group lingers in an adjacent parking lot, one member says: "I just wish I had my kids in there when that one young chick come up and started rattin' her mouth."

(20,809 posts)is that they yammer on and on about "freedom" and "rights", when what they're really talking about is "freedom" and "rights" just for THEM. They jabber about respect for the rights of business to decide whether or not they will permit OC, but, if a business does not do so, they hassle, harass, intimidate, whine, cry, bitch, moan, wave their metal phallic substitutes around, etc., etc. They don't seem to recognize that people and businesses should have the right to be free from guns in some places and that their fears are legitimate and need to be respected. It gets down to the old saw of "justice" really meaning justice for JUST US.

(7,720 posts)There was a bill passed by the legislature that would make it illegal for CCW permit holders to carry concealed guns into the capitol building. It was vetoed by the governor. When they arrive at the capitol, the CCW permit holder has to notify the guards that they are carrying and show their permit. The law has been this way since CCW was passed in 2003 and there have been zero incidents so far. I don't think too many people actually do carry concealed guns into the capitol.

"Firearm-related homicides dropped from 18,253 homicides in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011," according to a report by the federal , "and nonfatal firearm crimes dropped from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 in 2011.
It's pretty amazing, IMO.
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)the poster I was responding to was trying to connect the low crime rate in Dallas to their very lenient gun laws. I was pointing out the lie of that as NY's crime rate is lower than Dallas while also being very tough on guns.

NickB79
(19,111 posts)It's hard to say how much of the drop NY has seen is related to their gun laws and how much occurred for other reasons. It's possible that the gun laws, while doing something to prevent crime, are simply a secondary or tertiary cause for the lower crime, with some other factors taking the lion's share of the drop.
derby378
(30,252 posts)...do not have what we consider to be clean hands. They have been heavy-handed, authoritarian, and violent. The cult of surveillance also reigns supreme in NYC - try to take a picture of a building and you risk being questioned on the spot by the police.
In other words, they keep New Yorkers in line, but not in a way that many Americans would tolerate.
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)Do you really think - with the millions of tourists we get every year - that you can get into trouble for taking pictures of a building? Where on earth did you get that ridiculous idea. I doubt very much that our cops are in any way different from cops in every city.
You made the connection between low crime and lax gun laws. I simply showed it was bullshit and now you want to call NY a police state (utter bullshit). Why don't you just admit you were wrong?
derby378
(30,252 posts)Our decreasing crime rates? Our liberal gun laws? The fact that these two factors can exist side by side?

(997 posts)i have stated this question several time and it has been met with silence by the gun rights people. Where in the Second Amendment does it say that they have the right to carry their guns into and onto private property. Their rights end at the property line or threshold of the establishment. I should not have to live in fear that the guy sitting in the booth next to me is going to misread the actions of another patron and bring his weapon to bear. Also since when di Chili's becomes such a dangerous place to eat at. This is nothing but intimidation and our only recourse is to deny these people access to privately owned establishments if they want to bring their guns in.

(7,720 posts)"Where in the Second Amendment does it say that they have the right to carry their guns into and onto private property."
It does not say that. In Minnesota (where I live), businesses can post signs saying they ban guns on their premises. Even without the sign, they can ask people with guns to leave. Open carry is not legal in Minnesota (edit to add: without a CCW permit, which is ridiculous. Why allow open carry with a 'conceal carry' permit?)
i understand your point once again why should I have to post a sign on my property or establishment that says no weapons allowed. I don't go into a bar carrying a sick pack because I know the management is going to tell me that I cant do that. Its common sense to ask and not to assume that you can just do something on someone else's property. Thank you for answering my question about the 2nd amendment. By the way I am not anti gun I am anti stupidity and anti intimidation.
Jenoch
(7,720 posts)is that a place of business needs to put the sign up banning guns in their place of business. Frankly, all that really does is to keep the CCW permit holders from entering with a weapon. It does not stop a would be armed robber from entering with a concealed gun.
I don't recall ever seeing any liquor stores or convenience stores banning guns.
bpj62
(997 posts)And there it is, the belief that just like Ralphie in "A Christmas Story" has to save his family from Black Bart with his trusty Red Rider BB gun you seem to think that armed robbers are hanging out in front of every establishment waiting for the moment to strike. (33,982 posts)It is unlawful to open carry a handgun in the state of Texas. The law is silent on long guns. These are generally activists pushing for open carry of pistols, like many other states have, and the rifles would go away if such open carry was legal.

(19,111 posts)I've seen a moron open-carry here in Minnesota at a restaurant (yep, legal, and yep, made my wife and I uncomfortable). One of the reasons often given for carrying a gun is to protect yourself from another shooter.
If I were a mass shooter walking into a restaurant intent to kill as many people as possible, you know who's the first person I'd shoot? The dumbass open-carrying, because he's the biggest perceived threat to my rampage.
Open-carry does nothing in violent situations except paint a BIG FUCKING BULLSEYE on your person, yelling "SHOOT ME FIRST!" That's why you're supposed to conceal-carry your weapon; the idea is to make violent criminals unsure who exactly is armed and therefore forced to assume any of their victims could be armed and (supposedly) deter the crime from happening in the first place.
These jackasses aren't improving or expanding the rights of any of their fellow Americans to own firearms legally and safely.
And given that our nation's violent crime rate has fallen to a level not seen since the 1960's (even including the well-publicized mass shootings we all know of), the entire rationale behind carrying a gun on your person is largely reduced anyway: http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304066504576345553135009870

(5,756 posts)Idiots. I love how they want their rights protected but they don't want to honor the rights of a private establishment. As in the all-holy "free-market." It is the right of any private owner or corporate franchise to tell them guns are NOT allowed on the PRIVATE entities' property. It is within the RIGHTS of private business to refuse service to anyone as long as they aren't doing it to discriminate based on protected status such as race, sex, religion.
Idiots like these with firearms frighten people. Wonder why? Could it be the massacres that happen all too often here in the US? Oh, say, like a couple of days ago? So the owners of these PRIVATE businesses are well within their rights to ask these people to leave in order to make their customers feel comfortable and SAFE.
The public sidewalk outside these businesses is public. Stand there with your guns that represent your insignificant penis all you wish. That's legal so go for it. Don't, however, chastise or denigrate a business owner for trying to make the environment of their establishment non-threatening.

(3,300 posts)..they are not wanted where people go to relax and eat a meal. It's so much fun "relaxing" when there are 10 scruffy morons wielding semiautomatic rifles. You have no idea their intention, their training, safety and otherwise. These kind of mental midgets would be laughable if they weren't so dangerously incompetent and also have shit for brains.

I'm 60 years old, and I've never considered using my firearms just to fuck with people. It's like they're bored and playing a children's game of chicken with deadly ordinance. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't just seen it with my own eyes.
It's getting crazy out there. Someone fix it before it comes to Ohio, please.

(37,457 posts)I DON'T WANT TO FUCKING LIVE THAT WAY, thank you very much.
We need a cultural sea change to make using weapons ( outside of gun ranges, self-defense and lawful target shooting ) seriously uncool. 2A people, I don't know all the laws. I only know that this bullshit has to stop. Concealed carry, ok. Shooting targets in your backyard when it's lawful, OK. Self-defense in your own home, OK. Gun ranges, OK. This is BS. The madness has to stop.
