(42,770 posts)so many people would be aware/involved enough to register
to vote but not have an ID. There are so many occasions when
you need an ID besides driving.
Flying
Opening a bank account
Getting a refund at a store (on occasion)
Cashing a check
Using a credit car (on occasion)
Buying booze (if you are young)
to name a few. All I am saying is, it's amazing so many people
can survive without one.
Luckily, the DOJ put a stop to the blatant politicization. Thank
god we are in power now.

(41,694 posts)Let me tell you how much fun that was.
first, i couldn't renew online. So I went to the driver's license office. I was told that my "Citizenship" status was in question. My response was "What does my citizenship have to do with a DRIVER'S license.
Three trips later I had all the paperwork together.
1. My original birth certificate (in German) from Austria
2. The original notarized English translation thereof.
3. My State Department form stating that I am an American citizen by birth.
4. My DD-214
Even then, the person had to call in their stuporvisor, who then called in THEIR stuporvisor before it was approved.
I responded that I served in the United States Air Force with a Top Secret clearance and they didn't demand all this.
They replied, "How did you get your license then in the first place?"
I said back in 1974 when I first came to TX, I wasn't asked for all this crap just to get a DRIVER'S license.

(41,694 posts)And considering all the branch offices connect to the central computer, I doubt it would have made any difference.
the problem is all the new rules the Gestapo-excuse me, Homeland Security implemented in aftermath of 9-11-2001

(42,770 posts)they got a DL once before. Based on what you are saying, they are taking it a step
further and applying new rules on even those who were once considered "ok".

(5,005 posts)I need an ID to buy cough medicine. I need an ID to catch a fish. I need an ID to receive any sort of medical treatment. I need an ID to get SS benefits. I need an ID to rent an apartment or buy a home. The list goes on and on. I cannot for the life of me understand how so many people are surviving without an ID.

(171,057 posts)There was recently a story about a vet who went to vote in the primaries and couldn't, even though he had a government/military ID, with pic. The gop is twisting itself into pretzels to make it as difficult as possible for many supposed Dems to vote. If people don't know their state's requirements, they could be screwed.

(4,830 posts)Truth is a lot of poor people dont shop much, dont drive or have cars and never bank. Youll never see them at the airport, unless they work there and they have no use for a passport as they are not going anywhere. In America, voting is something you should be able to do easily whether you have any money or not. Rush Limbaugh and the GOP know poor people would likely never vote for the hard hearted people that populate the roles of that party so the simple, logical way to make sure poor people don't vote is simply to make sure voters have a photo ID. It just seems so reasonable, after all how could anyone not have photo ID.
The pole tax was made illegal in 1965, this voter ID crap deserves the same fate. As it is, people must register before the day of voting in most districts, and as they vote, the names are checked off the list to assure no double voting. Another repressive rule that needs abolishing is the "Felons cannot vote even after serving their time" rules that exist in states like Florida.
