Newtown dad writes letter to Richard Martinez

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2014/05/28/newtown-dad-writes-open-letter-to-calif-shooting-victims-father/
Dear Richard Martinez,

We have not met, but you are now part of our extended family. It is not a family we chose, but a family born from the horrible circumstance of losing a child to gun violence—one that’s only growing each day. My heart breaks for you because I know just a little about the long road ahead of you. We have reached out to you privately but publicly we wanted to say to you and those feeling the sorrow, anger and frustration of this weeks' shooting, you are not alone. It has helped me, and some of the other family members who lost children and family at Sandy Hook Elementary, to come together and advocate for common sense solutions to expanding programs for mental wellness and gun safety solutions. You will find your own path down this difficult road. But know that we are here for you and all of you who have been touched by this tragedy. Together we can and will build a safer world for all our children.

With deepest sympathy,
Mark Barden

all of the families of recent mass shooting victims have faded into obscurity, and no longer matter. I believe that their hopeful wishing that "this will all go away" is neither true, nor helpful. There is a change in the wind, and the right-wing gun lobby is losing its power bit by bit.

Gun control groups and organizations are becoming more organized, more influential, and more vocal. Most sensible American gun owners agree with stricter gun control measures, and eventually the NRA bought-and-paid-for politicians will be defeated -- on both sides of the political spectrum.

Although the idiocy he displayed was ripe for mocking. Most gun lovers are not idiotic as to admit not reading a post that they then unload on with the standard gun lover tripe.

He said ,"I want action not words. ". I guess he was talking about politicians. When I learned it was a letter published in the WaPo... it became a political type letter. So I stayed away. The Newtown writer was writing something for the general public, and did so because he had an agenda, and was using the recent death .

How the hell can we prevent more needless murders if people don't speak out about our cowards in the House and Senate who refuse to act? And who better to lead the charge than those who have been most touched by these tragedies?

Personally I find you gun nuts claims totally repugnant that these families are sensationalizing or capitalizing on their own tragedy. HOW DARE you make a claim like that, you haven't lost a child to this senselessness.

Edit to add: I'm a gun owner, have been since I was a teenager on the farm. I for the life of me don't understand all the NRA hype and the gun nuts' fear of common sense regulations to keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn't have them.

are in the majority (by far) of American gun owners. It is the rabid, vocal minority of Second Amendment absolutists who see monsters under every bed, and tyrants behind every bush, and feel the NRA-induced need to be armed 24/7.

Thank you for speaking out, and for supporting common sense solutions to gun violence in this country.

I wished the title had included open letter and not just letter. I couldn't see how that by itself was newsworthy.
