The president said overturning the law would be "an unprecedented and extraordinary step" and compared the court's rejection of the law to "judicial activism."
"For years what we've heard is the biggest problem on the bench was judicial activism," the president said, baiting conservatives who have long complained about justices' political agendas. The president stressed that the judges are "unelected" and noted that the law was passed by a democratically elected Congress.

6. James Buchanan was tipped off to the Dred Scott ruling before it was issued publicly

Not only that, but he lobbied one of the justices to vote with Sanford and against Scott. THAT would be an impeachable offense today.

The tipoff, while unethical, would not be impeachable.

that the Powers That Be need to keep the decisions from being so far right they'll let him have this one. He would be severely politically wounded.

8. My guess is that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will retire around the end of April 2016

See here regarding Ginsburg: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=277983

p.s. I don't expect to see anyone voluntarily retiring in 2012, 2013, 2014, or 2015, but ya never know.
Here's a link to a LIST of current Justices with their ages included: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Supreme_Court#Current_justices

Edited to add:
U.S. Supreme Court Justices are appointed for 'life',
so unless one dies or retires they can hold that seat as long as they wish to.
