Anchorage: With gay rights on the ballot, precincts run out of ballots

Source: Anchorage Daily News

An "unprecedented number of voters" turned out for today's municipal election and multiple precincts have run out of ballots in the final hour of voting, according to City Clerk Barbara Gruenstein.

She said election workers are rushing to get more ballots into the polling places. Polls close at 8 p.m. (midnight EDT)

Meantime, Jim Minnery, head of the Protect Your Rights --Vote No on Prop. 5 group, acknowledged sending out an e-mail Monday or Tuesday to a couple thousand people on his list that wrongly told people they could register at the polls and vote immediately. In fact, you have to have registered within 30 days prior to the election to have your vote counted.

The ballot item that's drawn the most attention is Proposition 5, an initiative that would add "sexual orientation or transgender identity" to the city's anti-discrimination code. The ballot language asks whether the city code should provide legal protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or transgender identity, as the code already does on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, marital status, age and disabilities.

The vice chairman of the Alaska Independence party. When ugly meets stupid it wears suspenders.

Who would want to live in a country/state with people like this running it.

The guy talks about independence and the US military is one of the biggest employers in Alaska.

Why isn't that - a public confession - an instant conviction and jail term?
