today we made the vet trip no one want to make
we took our sheba in for the final time.
she was down to under 5 pounds and was having trouble walking
she was the queen of the household and my wifes baby girl.
good bye dear sheba we will miss you. until we meet again at the rainbow bridge.
as for us... i think its time for a tumbler of bourbon or two

I loved you so --
'twas Heaven here with you.

(3,568 posts)This is a sad thread and by the time I responded I was really feeling low. I was scrolling up through the responses and that gif you have just cracked me up. I laughed out loud. That is a seriously scary move that cat has there. I see that and whatever problem we were having is totally forgotten on my end. Cat wins. Whatever he wants. The bed, the room, money, whatever.
i hope rdking could get a laugh as well, but maybe not today.

(20,453 posts)And, how can you describe your love in doing it? Because she deserved you to be there with her until the rainbow bridge. I'm so sorry for your loss of dear little sheba. Please accept a warm embrace.

(81,220 posts)I'm so sorry. MAN, we've been through that, too. MISERABLE. The worst drive ever taken. The vet trip no one wants to make. No kidding. Many of us here at DU have had to bid a beloved pet a reluctant farewell lately. You're not alone. And you don't mourn alone, either.

(3,284 posts)It is the loss of beloved pets that makes me hope there's an afterlife of some sort,
even more than the deaths of beloved people do.
Maybe that's weird.
But that's how I feel.

(3,568 posts)It's tough when the light goes out in something innocent and beautiful. It's really hard.
When death approaches I'm reminded of a line from a Lord Byron poem, "If I laugh at any mortal thing, 'tis only that I do not weep." I think of that too often for some reason.
What I do in situations like this is probably unhealthy. I try to keep it out of my mind as much as I can. I never forget but I avoid reminders. A lot of people find some comfort in looking at photos and talking about memories but for me it just brings back the end and the permanent loss. And regrets. Always regrets. We're never perfect in any of our relationships no matter how devoted we were. There's always something we could have done better even if there really wasn't.
I do apologize for such a gloomy response. Your post just really hit home with me. 22 years is a long time.
I don't have comforting words. I just don't know what to say, but you do have my sincerest empathy and sympathy. I know it hurts.

(135,425 posts)I've got to say, you cared for that cat beautifully.
That's a good long life.
I've had a cat that made it to 21 (barely), another that made it to 20, but 22 years, and you had to help the poor thing over the bridge...that is a well-cared-for cat!
It sucks to lose a companion you've had for so long. So yeah, have two.
Toast a good life well lived. Mourn. Hang in there.
