Micro stroke. Supposedly no lingering effects. Pops called me this morning but I didn't have time to post until now. Of course, true to form for a 78 y/o man who just had his world rocked, he said "She's going to be OK, it was a magnum stroke." I asked if he meant micro and he said "Of course." Well I pulled over and had a good cry. Day's been brighter ever since. Thanks for being there DU. Be back later. My Parents have been visiting me here in So. Cal. since yesterday. My Pop's in his late seventies, my Mom in her early seventies. We were on our way out to dinner at about six when my Mom says "My face feels numb on the right side." I told her it was probably the altitude (7,000 feet) and the fact she hadn't used her oxygen machine all day probably had something to do with it. Halfway down the stairs to the driveway she said she needed to sit down because her leg and arm felt numb as well. I asked if she wanted me to call 911.
Long story short, just this minute, from my house, I watched the helicopter carrying her fly over the mountain on its way down to Loma Linda Medical Center from here in Big Bear. She's having a stroke. My Wife left about twenty minutes ago with my Dad to take him down. My boss told me on the phone he couldn't spare me tomorrow so I'm here on the mountain watching the red light on the tail of the helicopter fade in the direction of Mt. San Gorgonio. When I kissed her goodbye her face wasn't droopy, she could move all her extremities, and she wasn't slurring her words. The Doctor told me once she was in the air she'd be on the roof at Loma Linda in short order, and that the present situation, and the fact she spoke up the moment she felt the numbness were all very good things. My Sister will be waiting for her when she lands. Got my fingers crossed.
Do me a favor. Pray if you pray. Don't pray if you don't. Just close your eyes for a moment and send a good thought out for Virginia. She'll appreciate it. So will my Dad, Jim. And of course, so will I.
That's all. Do that for me, then go back to the wars. I won't be joining; I have more pressing things at the moment. Right now, I'm gonna go out on the back porch with a glass of wine and a smoke and look at the stars for a few. And hope.
Love you all.

(11,785 posts)Something like this happened to my dad on Christmas Day many years ago. It was a TIA (transient ischemic attack), not a full-blown stroke. He had some blockages in his arteries that got taken care of and made a full recovery.
hue
(4,949 posts)While the Patient regains function quickly with "mini-strokes" TIAs are warning symptoms that another, more permanent "stroke" or brain attack may occur. Hopefully the hospital will do appropriate tests and open the arteries that feed Her brain; usually the carotid arteries or another cerebral artery. She may be given TPA (alteplase) if She fits the criteria. But the hospital will prob do a good job of assessing exactly what is wrong & act appropriately.

She should be fine.
My dad passed in '08 and my mom in '01. I miss them very very much. But I don't miss worrying about them or dreading calls in the middle of the night. It's really tough. All you can do is tell them you love them every chance you get.

(7,720 posts)and I won't presume that what happened to my aunt is in any way similar to what your mother is going through, but my aunt was in assisted living with a terminal illness. She had a stroke at age 82. I thought that was it. I visited her three weeks later and she was more alert and eating better than she was before the stroke. I've never seen anything like it.
I will pray for your mom (dad too) and I hope she will not have any disabilities from this incident. It does sound like it was caught quite early.

Having kinda up-close, personal observation on this: even if her speech and movement are unimpaired, watch closely for personality and memory changes. Basal ganglia strokes have a strong correlation with post-stroke depression, lack of motivation, damage to executive function and procedural planning and attention deficit. The sooner these get observed, medicated and into therapy, the better the outcome. (You and your father will notice these -- her doctors, even the ones at home, won't because they're more subtle and don't show under "social interaction" rules.)
The good news is that we're getting a lot better with stroke management, and Loma Linda has great neurologists. You'll all get through the next 24 hours. Take deep breaths, know she's in good hands, and you've got many, many people in your corner.
If she has a craft (knitting, embroidery, scrap-booking, whatever), get a project into her hands soon. There's some decent evidence that rewiring muscle memory skills helps rewire everything else.

(21,046 posts)I technically had what was considered a stroke on Thanksgiving of 2011. I had Deep Vein Thrombosis from sitting in a traffic jam from Hell in Dallas on the Tuesday beforehand and went to the ER with uncontrolled diabetes and blood clots in my lungs, called pulmonary thrombosis.
They never would tell me how many clots I had or how big after the CAT scan. They did tell me I had a saddle embolism, which is in the artery behind your heart that splits and sends blood to your lungs. Those things, if big enough, will "make you drop like that (snaps fingers)" quote from one of my doctors.
It is in the interest of the hospital to keep me alive for the next hundred years because it will take me that long to pay them back at the Hospital - 7 days in ICU in Oklahoma City.
Good vibes to your mom.

The thing that amazes me the most about DU is that the seemingly endless waterfall of anger never stops replenishing the reservoir of hope. This place turns on a dime, exactly when a DUer needs it to most.
I can't thank you enough.
Got a message from my Wife a few minutes ago. My Mom is resting, and my Dad and Sister are with her in her room. The very fact that she can have visitors makes me feel like there is positive information coming, although all signs are that she did in fact have a small stroke, her first.
I think I may actually be able to go to sleep. My friends at DU helped.

(9,067 posts)Her mom had the same issue. After the doctors checked her out they sent her home. It happened again and my friend said she was calling 911 but her mother stopped her saying she was fine after all and insisted that my friend not call. She didn't want to upset her mother for fear that it would cause another one so they agreed that she would take her mom back to the hospital.
Unfortunately, on their way to the doctor (hours later), she had another one that paralyzed her on one side.
Do NOT hesitate to call 911 if they let her go home and it happens again.
