Who could have predicted that the U.S. Supreme Court was going to empower religious organizations to start screaming for federal exemptions to everything they find icky? Pretty much everyone, actually, saw that coming and here's the first of it. A group of faith leaders, including an Obama supporter, has asked the administration to allow them to continue to discriminate against the gays in their hiring practices.
Their call, in a letter sent to the White House Tuesday, attempts to capitalize on the Supreme Court case by arguing that it shows the administration must show more deference to the prerogatives of religion.
"We are asking that an extension of protection for one group not come at the expense of faith communities whose religious identity and beliefs motivate them to serve those in need," the letter states. [ ]
It comes from as group of faith leaders who are generally friendly to the administration, many of whom have closely advised the White House on issues like immigration reform. The letter was organized by Michael Wear, who worked in the Obama White House and directed faith outreach for the president's 2012 campaign. Signers include two members of Catholics for Obama and three former members of the Presidents Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

(58,112 posts)of hundreds if not thousands of workers, this is in direct violation of the First Amendment.
The United States government is to pass no law giving respect to religion.
Businesses aren't churches, temples or synagogues, but this ruling puts them in that category, this decision can only bring about division and disaster as it undermines the Constitution.
One would think after all the demonization of other theocracies (rightfully so) around the world, the last thing the United States would want is to join their ranks.
If Supreme Court Justices can be impeached, I'm all for it, no doubt the Democrats will need to take firm control of the Congress first, that's just another reason why this fall's elections are so critical.
http://biztaxlaw.about.com/od/glossaryc/g/closelyheldcorp.htm
Definition:
A closely held corporation is a corporation in which more than half of the shares are held by fewer than 5 individuals. Closely held corporations are private companies, and are not publicly held. In a closely held corporation, if one of the shareholders wants to sell some or all of his/her shares, the sale must take place with one of the other existing shareholders, since no sale of shares can take place.

Public Citizen has an excellent suggestion for the text for a workable amendment.
You can't just clarify the limits on the rights of corporations because the conservatives will just create some alternative business form and then claim that it, inanimate and inhuman as it is, has equal rights.
We need to amend the Constitution to clarify just who is a person for purposes of the Constitution.

(2,381 posts)The Court did not decide these cases on Constitutional or First Amendment grounds, but on the language of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which apparently provides more broad guarantees than the First Amendment. Congress in theory can amend the RFRA to say corporations do not have these types of religious freedoms. It all depends on getting Congress to do so.
In other words, GOTV.

(80,700 posts)this worked out for them. You just watch. LGBT brothers and sisters - be ready for it. They're gonna use this to come for YOU, too. Learn from what's happened to us women and our right to choose - which is now on the ropes. Drop your guard for a single nanosecond and THIS is what happens. THIS is what WILL happen. Do not assume for an instant - that the right to marry whoever you love and with whom want to build a life and a family - that right you've fought for and struggled for and worked your asses off for - do NOT assume it's safe, even though the tide "seems" to have been turning in your favor at the moment.
There still exist LEGIONS of people who don't think you deserve such a right, or such protections. Not only that, but some of 'em think YOU are a sin. Your very selves. All things bad and sinful - godforsaken and worthy of being changed or fought or isolated or shunned or done away with altogether. Think I'm exaggerating? Think my hair's on fire while I write this? Think I'm just getting hysterical or something? Look at what's happened to Roe v Wade. Feels like pre-Nazi Germany around here sometimes, doesn't it.

(16,149 posts)many Judges and politicians in powerful positions in this Country are in cahoots with the extreme far right Cult of Christian Dominionism (New Apostolic Reformation theology movement)??? I know they operate the Presidents Prayer Breakfast every year in Washington DC, and strong rumor has it that they helped author Uganda's notorious genocide bill called KILL THE GAYS in 2009.

(35 posts)In the good old days.. okay, a few thousand years ago... burning of Christians for sport was okay.
Can we discriminate against them? Protest outside their doors with bullhorns, calling them murders and terrorists?
How many churches get burned down or bombed vs. others?
The Supreme court (bad side) has royally fucked America. About the ONLY countries that don't have Separation of Church and State are the Islamic ones.
How long before women lose the right to vote and we can stone them because they dishonored someone?!
If Christians *DID* follow the bible to the letter, they would be killing women just like the Muslims in Pakistan.

Actually, that is TRUE.
Think of how many JOBS would be available if all those nasty evil women were terminated, other than a few lady-jobs (grooming, answering the phone - wait, those jobs are now Chinese and computer) - Women must be barefoot and pregnant!
Single mothers = too bad! You're a whore, no matter the circumstances.
Its plain to see this sick war on our sisters, our mothers, our daughters. They have ALREADY lost rights to their bodies. They are losing rights to their health. They are struggling with rights in the workforce and how long before they lose the right to vote?!
Abuse of women is worse in countries with less equal rights.
Judge Scalia has been vocal that WOMEN do not belong in the court room (must be awkward sitting next to that slimy turd).
I have run into a few college women who are republican, and yeah... they don't see it.
