Kagan Takes Up Hunting with Fellow Justice Scalia

http://www.myfoxdfw.com/dpps/news/kagan-takes-up-hunting-with-fellow-justice-scalia-dpgonc-20120404-kh_19031801
(NewsCore) - US Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan surprised a Wisconsin audience this week with news that she has recently taken to hunting with her ideological opposite, fellow justice Antonin Scalia.

"He's made a huntress out of me," Kagan revealed at a Marquette law school panel in Milwaukee on Tuesday.

The liberal justice revealed she and her ideological foe had shot quail and pheasant together and planned to hunt bigger game in the future.

"He insists I'm going to shoot myself an antelope," the New York City native said, adding that she had come to view hunting as "really good fun."

Ha! That's great, isn't it? Two people from ideologically opposite ends of the spectrum, coming together to unnecessarily kill a third, completely unrelated thing.

I would be surprised if they shot some pheasants and no one ate them - they're pretty good eating, but you need to be careful when you chew. Bite down too hard on birdshot and you'll crack a tooth.

I don't kill anything I'm not going to eat when I'm hunting or fishing. No true sportsman would do otherwise.

It's being in the woods on a nice day with friends and enjoying the outdoors. I don't measure the fun I've had by the number of animals I kill (but it is nice to go home with something). I really enjoyed an ice fishing trip with my hunting and fishing buddies a couple of months ago even though we caught nothing.

Once in a while, I'll take a shotgun with me and if I'm lucky, I'll bring home a bird or two for dinner. I do a lot of fishing and release most of what I catch, but sometimes I'll bring a few home for a meal. I see nothing wrong with that and offer no apology for it.

I can understand that hunting isn't for everyone and if it's not your thing, that's fine. What I do is not your concern and the snark is not appreciated.

"I like to get out in the woods" is a really lame reason for blowing away an animal. If a hunter ever actually said "I just really enjoy killing defenseless animals", I'd be stunned by the honesty.

Not that I care about Kagan hunting. Good on her. I live in the country.

But is this the image of a Supreme Court justice? And I'm not even talking about decorum.

I can't even imagine a sentient being in the USSC or environs who has NEVER heard of Scalia's famous duck hunt with Dick Cheney, and how that event is synonymous with corruption and/or influence peddling.

What is Kagan thinking? Or does a fraud like Scalia not bother her?

Scalia must be some sort of charmer or have some great personality that hides his bizarro intellect.

It's common knowledge that he and Ginsburg are pretty close to best friends -- they and their spouses spend New Year's and holidays together, go to the opera/theater together, and all that.

I'm pretty sure Kagan is pretty far off from Scalia's ideological opposite. I'm not sure if any Justice has been as far left is he is out on the Reich.

The framing of Kennedy as a "moderate" has been destructive but this frame is almost as dangerous because once a moderate is painted as far left this end of the spectrum is herded toward the aforementioned fucking Kennedy who really is much more "moderate" than a Rehnquist, he just is a hair less absurd than the four wild extremists that our chumps rolled over and confirmed when absolute obstruction was required to keep the country out of the toilet and as a side benefit, move them to the middle some and give us some latitude on the left.

All the "calculation" predictably turned to crap and not any combination of things accomplished in three decades of allowing a radical run to the right on the courts which is magnified by the volume of appointments stacked over the years was worth allowing these asses to scuttle the country for as long as they draw breath.

Bah!

And representative of a classic bit of disconnect. You have tens of millions of Americans who hunt, many more than that who approve of and support it, and for a lot of people it's part of their survival. Even never once having hunted anything that was willing to leave me alone, I can appreciate that, and yet there are still a lot of people here who treat hunting as disgusting and evil.

I'm not sure if you read the article but we're talking about recreation hunting here which includes, as Kagan adds, the ultimate goal of Scalia to get her to bag an antelope.

I'm not even sure that Kagan eats meat.
