http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2014/07/03/3456258/an-hour-after-sandy-hook-parent-pleas-chris-christie-vetoes-gun-reform-bill/On Wednesday morning, parents of victims killed in the Sandy Hook massacre delivered a 55,000-signature petition to Gov. Chris Christie (R) imploring him to sign a modest gun reform law that would reduce the number of rounds permissible in gun magazines from 15 to 10. An hour later, Christie vetoed that bill, saying it was the very embodiment of reform in name only.
Christie sent the bill back as a conditional veto with calls to reform the mental health system, but his veto effectively killed the provision that would have limited the number of bullets in a magazine.
[H]is statement accusing us of grandstanding and furthering empty rhetoric is a blow to the memories of our children, said Nicole Hockley and Mark Barden, who both lost their first-grade sons during the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. If Governor Christie truly wants to make meaningful reform, then focusing on what actually works would include the mental health reforms he proposes PLUS the limitation on high capacity magazines.

Christ Christie, man of the people. /sarcasm off.

(14,733 posts)then what exactly is his beef with it?
I've never understood the people who claim a law shouldn't exist because they think it will make no difference. If it makes no difference, then why should you care if it exists or not? Knock yourselves out, have tons of laws that 'don't do anything'. It won't hurt anyone or anything.

(8,614 posts)The bill, which I am sure all of you have read, , would include all semi auto 22 rimfires. This would make illegal most all 22 rimfire semi-auto rifles as their under barrel tube magazines carry 15 rounds of ammunition. There was no grandfathering of currently owned rifles, and no time allowed to convert and/or dispose of these rifles. Had he signed the bill then the owners would have become automatic felons, subject to arrest and prosecution. And since NJ has a required permit and registration of all semi auto firearms law enforcement would have no problem arresting the owners.
I realize that many of the posters on DU would laugh and support that scenario, it would not end well for those that passed, or signed off, or for their political party.
