Celebrating the 4th

Last edited Fri Jul 4, 2014, 02:24 PM - Edit history (2)

____ I don't think anyone can define exactly what folks are celebrating or observing today - no more that I can dictate to anyone that there's something worth celebrating or observing on the 4th of July.

I had a few July 4th boycotts over the years, so I can understand sentiments that argue against celebrating today, and mostly agree. I do think, though, that folks can observe the day in whatever way they choose and still appreciate the challenges the nation faces and the shortcomings of our democracy and our citizenship.

We had our small town neighborhood parade today. Must have been 200 kids. This neighborhood is growing and its always nice to see everyone and to spend the morning sharing the time together.

I've never viewed the country as perfect, though I will certainly argue in favor of the progresses we have made - many on a personal level which directly affect my own citizenship. I've always understood that recognizing our nation means recognizing it's faults, as well as it's promise and opportunity.

That's kind of what I celebrate. Our democracy provides the opportunity to be better. Coming together today, as a community, and as a nation, is a good and important recognition of our determination to grow and accomplish together. It's a bit, pollyannish, I know, but it's an understanding I've carried with me from the days where my own citizenship was in question because of society's attitude towards folks like me.

I believe in the promises of our country, and I also believe they're worth fighting for. That's something to stand up and celebrate today - observing and acknowledging our democracy and our citizenry - in order to make it a more perfect union.
