They put right-wing ideology firstand voters dont like it.Six of the nations most heavy-handed Republican governors are facing tough 2014 re-election contests that leading Beltway analysts say are toss-ups, which means current polling suggests that they face good odds of being ousted by voters this fall.
The endangered Republicans include party leaders on a litany of issues that have come to define the modern GOP as being more driven by anti-government ideology and corporate giveaways than helping the middle- and working classes. The governors are known for cutting corporate taxes, public-sector union-busting, defunding education, gutting social safety nets, not expanding Medicaid for the poor under Obamacare, loosening gun laws and stripping voting rights. Many have used their office to reward their allies and bully opponents. In response, pollsters are saying they are in 2014s closest races.
Thats the conclusion at RealPolitics.com, The Cook Political Report, Larry Sabatos Crystal Ball, and by other political handicappers. In contrast, the three toss-up races involving Democratic governors have very different dynamics. Two are rematches with past candidates who lost to incumbents (Connecticut, Hawaii). A third involves a GOP millionaire running against an uncharismatic governor in a large blue state (Illinois).
Lets look at the six endangered Republicans who may be ousted this fall.

(14,255 posts)Lately there have been ads on TV portraying him as a friend to all the little children and poor families, etc. Vomitous indeed. Onerous conditions on Charlotte's Web, which was only okay-ed in an attempt to forestall a broader ballot initiative this November. Steadfastly refusing expanded medicaid until just before the lapdog legislature went on vacation - they, of course, said no, just as ordered, but Scott will be able to say that he said yes. I assume I will be voting for Charlie Crist. I would rather vote, by the way, for a Republican turned Democrat than a Democrat who acts like a Republican.

I will happily vote for Crist.

I understand the complaints, but if you can't get behind her for the sake of the state, just quietly step aside. We need Walker out.

(53,475 posts)... fault of those who despise her right-wing policies that she has right-wing policies.
I'll vote for her in November, but I'll have to hold my nose to do it. Hell, I'm not even sure we'd be better off with her as Governor than we are with Walker. We'd still get the GOP's policies rammed down our throats, but Democrats would have to take the blame.

(1,580 posts)I lived near Madison for a while in the 80's and just loved it. Wisconsin used to be a fairly progressive state. Wasn't the first public radio station in Madison?

(4,473 posts)Remember Joe McCarthy? Born, raised and is buried in Appleton. Yes, he was succeeded by Gaylord Nelson, but Wisconsinites tend to go both ways on this.

(27,985 posts)The rest of the state, not so much. We have way too many Democrats who sit out of midterms and it gives us Scott Walker and Ron Fucking Johnson. The GOP here is rabid and committed to every election. Meanwhile, the state Democratic leadership is a mess and many boots on the ground Democrats hate them. For good reason.

(1,580 posts)I live in a county that is so right wing it boggles the mind. I can't stand to even look at the letters to the editor section in the local rag.

(27,985 posts)We gained the attention of DU during the Wisconsin Supreme Court race and recount a few years ago.
People have fun ripping on us and making us out to be the villains of the state despite the fact that, in raw numbers, we're third of counties in number of Democrats in state right behind Dane and Milwaukee. And our Democrats tend to show up in midterms better than the other two.

(1,580 posts)We have a good group of Democrats but we are pretty out numbered.

(25,491 posts)even the Rethugs hate his guts because they knew that he soft-pedaled the Sandusky investigation. Ain't no one in this Commonwealth who isn't somehow someway related to State College goings-on.
Even the wing nuts here in rural western PA are saying they'll vote for anyone but Corbett.

(16,230 posts)Everyone will be glad to see him go. Although I disagree with your the idea that everyone in the state was somehow involved in the Penn State scandals, Corbett was certainly involved at least by dragging his feet on the investigation.

(144,945 posts)Perry is retiring and his hand picked successor, Greg Abbott, is running a stupid campaign. The latest Abbott gaffe is that individual citizens need to go to chemical companies and ask if these chemical companies are storing dangerous or explosive chemicals at their facilities. This is stupid even for a republican.
Go Wendy Davis.

(7,237 posts)When your own party even hates you, it is game over. Yet he was unopposed in the primary. If the R's had found another candidate, we might have a horse race in November. But they did not. The governor's mansion will be occupied by D's again. Yay. I believe we have a decent shot at taking back the state Senate as well.

(2,949 posts)to see Snyder added to this list. He has done much damage to Michigan. He is the result of the Republican backlash after Obama won the presidency.
For some reason Democrats do not vote in mid-terms???

(10,494 posts)a governor of the same ilk as Perry and the 6 mentioned here, Greg Abbott. Abbott serves the same Kool-Aid that RW Texans never get sick of. Wendy Davis, she of the pink filibusters shoes, is a long shot still, but also the future of our state. She will help down ballot Democrats get elected, even if she doesn't. I hope she does though!

(9,257 posts)That most likely putting Dems in the Governors mansions will have some coattails putting more Dems in state legislatures, thus helping to reverse the ridiculous gerrymandering (here in PA at least) after the 2020 census.
My Repug state rep of about 40 years is finally retiring and I'm working hard to turn that seat blue at last.
