I was raised Catholic and liked reading the details of the catechism -- which colors priests could wear on which days, how the calendar of the church is reckoned, and the proper answers to the catechism questions. One thing that fascinated me was that there are mortal sins that are so terrible that they themselves cry out to heaven for vengeance. Two of them are murder and sodomy, and we've certainly seen lots of crying for vengeance on such things, from people and politicians and closely held corporations their own personal selves. But the other two you don't hear so much about: oppression of the poor and the defrauding workers of their just wages.
Oppression of the poor and defrauding workers, in the teaching of the Catholic Church, are just as mortal sins as murder and sodomy.
I've since left the church and its teachings. LGBT friends have told me I am an ally, and obviously I reject the idea of sodomy being a sin or crime. However, I can still wonder what would happen if everyone who spent so much time worrying about unimplanted zygotes and gay marriage spent the same amount of effort and money on economic justice. For some of them, their faith requires it.

(574 posts)has anyone mentioned that to, oh, I don't know...ANY-FUCKING-BODY ELSE?!! There isn't one priest, nun, alter boy...never mind the alter boys, but did the Berrigan brothers have no heirs? Anyone know how to email the Nuns on The Bus?
Thank you Brickbat. "oppression of the poor (Ex 2:23), and defrauding workers of their just wages (Jas 5:4)" Who'd a thunk it?

(19,339 posts)sins. And OF COURSE sodomy is (I mean, if masturbation is a sin, sodomy obviously is). But I always thought the oppression and defrauding of wages were odd to include in there. But now that I've put childhood ways behind me, it seems to me that if people are going to put that level of importance on the first two, someone should ask them why they don't on the second two.
