Kansas Young Democrats to protest at Hobby Lobby

LAWRENCE — The Kansas Young Democrats plan to protest the ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores Inc. on July 7. On a 5-4 decision on June 30, the Supreme Court ruled that closely held corporations may object to the birth control provision of the Affordable Care Act.

The Kansas Young Democrats released the following statement on the ruling: “We are disappointed in the actions of the United States Supreme Court. Women’s equality is incontrovertible. Young women are especially burdened by the costs of reproductive healthcare. The all-male side that ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby Stores Inc. this past Monday has grossly expanded the rights of corporations by stepping on those of women’s. This ruling will only expand the ways in which corporations can ‘object’ to any alleged burden.”

The Kansas Young Democrats believe that due to last Monday’s ruling – more young women will be galvanized to vote in this November’s election. “We’re excited for the opportunity this has presented us. Young people are interested in equality. Young people are interested in the equitable treatment of their mothers, sisters and daughters. Young people vote when they have a reason and the Supreme Court, like the backwards-thinking of Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, made a serious mistake that will require showing up to the polls in November to voice our displeasure. This moves young Democrats closer to victory in November.”

The Kansas Young Democrats expect over fifty people to be in attendance this coming Monday. The protest will occur on the sidewalks outside of the Lawrence, KS Hobby Lobby at 1801 W. 23rd Street. More information can be found on the Kansas Young Democrats Facebook Page.

Rally planned for 'women's equality' in Boston
Protest over Supreme Court decisions

BOSTON —A rally is planned in Boston to protest recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions that organizers say reduces access to reproductive health services and birth control and puts women and health care providers at risk.

The rally is scheduled for Tuesday at City Hall Plaza in Boston.

Organizers say the rally is a response to a pair of recent decisions, including one that struck down the Massachusetts abortion clinic buffer zone law that barred protesters from coming within 35 feet of clinic entrances. Anti-abortion protesters praised the decision, saying they're just exercising their First Amendment rights as they try to counsel women.

The other is a decision that said Hobby Lobby Inc. and other businesses can use religious beliefs of ownership to avoid covering some or all contraceptives in employee health plans.

I never go to the massive one. I would like to see protests at the smaller one because everyone goes there. and it's along the slower but main street connecting cedar falls to waterloo, that and McDonalds and Dollar General might be upset at the protests showing up ....as they are in the parking lot..

as a Dem precinct chair to make that change. Sign up to work at the local level for politicians who reflect your ideas and that will start change. Give money to candidates who reflect your ideas, since money had the biggest voice according to our SCOTUS. Complain here and protest, but change comes from using the system. That is the sad truth in the US today. Hobby Lobby will go on its merry way. I personally stopped shopping there when they refused to respect women for "religious" reasons. But they won't go under, nor will they change their policies. They do not have to.

If you don't understand that these protests are so much more than affecting HL's bottom line, more's the pity. Too bad that you bothered to come onto this thread, criticize and question the political participation of people you don't even know, and tell them that protests are a waste of their time.

I went and came away a changed person. Came back and told pissed-off hubby I'm not attending church anymore - I'm PRO-CHOICE and ANTI-WAR - deal with it! If our protests reduce their gross income by 10% they might go out of business. The Greens are greedy people, and greed always trumps principle. They will "voluntarily" agree to modify their stance in spite of the ruling when they see women outside their door protesting their decision. Knocking off the profits of a few blue state stores will be enough to start them thinking. But the best protest we can give is around all of the holiday times. Their stores are very busy at Halloween----leading right into the 2014 Election. What a great opportunity they have made for the opposition. And what an opportunity we have ----a virtual Halloween nightmare for the Greens.

I walked with my 17 year old and five of her friends. I am seriously proud of those women. They hit the streets like they'd been born with signs in hand, and any rare negative comments from the crowd were met with a smile and a "Happy 4th of July."

My kid carried a sign that said, "You're my boss not my Dr."

One sign read "Contraception is basic health care!"

We had one that said "Protest sign materials from Michael's=PRICELESS!"

I was fairly old school with a simple, "My body, MY Decisions!"

Felt good to hit the streets, but it was simply amazing to be out with this next generation.

I'm 56 years old and I love seeing the new generation of activists getting engaged and involved! It does feel good to hit the streets again! Good for you, spreading the word with some young feminists in a 4th of July parade.

"My body, MY Decisions!" - Old school but right on!

Thank you, Laura and PEACE always!

Young people vote when they have a reason and the Supreme Court, like the backwards-thinking of Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, made a serious mistake that will require showing up to the polls in November to voice our displeasure.

Please everyone. Help GOTV!

I know it is an innocent typo, but so many people don't even know the place I live is a state ("Is that part of Long island?" Uh, no.). And the fact it was one of the original 13 colonies makes that a cardinal sin for any American not to know.

I love the article at the link -- the Courthouse Sunken Gardens are a popular spot for weddings (including my son's two years ago) and wouldn't you know it that the bride and groom on hand came by to have pix taken with the protestors.

Protesters To Hand Out Condoms At Burbank Hobby Lobby Store
July 7, 2014

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — Hundreds of protesters Monday were expected to descend on a Hobby Lobby store in Burbank over last week’s Supreme Court decision that allowed the company to exempt certain contraceptives from employees’ medical insurance on moral grounds.

Members of pro-choice groups like Feminist Majority, Planned Parenthood, National Organization of Women, and others planned hand out condoms and coupons from other craft stores to encourage shoppers to boycott the store’s grand opening at 641 N. Victory Boulevard.

Protesters will also be soliciting donations for Planned Parenthood and demonstrating how to make IUDs out of pipe cleaners and other materials found at Hobby Lobby, according to organizers Cathy Garcia and Lauren Steiner.

Supporters were also encouraged to “dress up in an IUD or condom costume” in order to “celebrate the beautiful sexual autonomy which people (but especially women) posses (sic)” on the group’s Facebook page....

A dozen protesters disrupt opening of Hobby Lobby store in Totowa [video]

TOTOWA — A dozen protesters sought to disrupt the Monday morning opening ceremony of the Hobby Lobby store on Route 46 and urged customers not to shop at a company that the Supreme Court ruled last week does not have to pay for insurance coverage for certain forms of birth control.

"One, two, three, four, let's go shop at A.C. Moore," they chanted. "Stay away until they pay."

The protesters drowned out store officials as they made remarks and cut a ribbon outside the store with an oversized scissor, joined by an owner of the plaza and the president of the North Jersey Chamber of Commerce.

The Supreme Court ruled last Monday that closely held for-profit corporations, such as Hobby Lobby, had religious rights that allowed them to decline to cover certain birth-control services for employees in their health insurance, as mandated by the Affordable Care Act....

'A craft store is not a church,' protesters demonstrated at Hobby Lobby in Mobile
By Cassie Fambro
July 05, 2014

MOBILE, Alabama-- Just shy of 20 protesters showed up on Saturday morning at approximately 10 a.m. to voice their dismay for the Supreme Court's decision to side with Hobby Lobby earlier this week.

SCOTUS ruled that Hobby Lobby was not required to provide for four kinds of birth control, Plan B, (morning after pill,) Ella, Copper Intrauterine Device and IUD with progestin because some deem them "abortifacients."

The group stood in 90 degree heat and held signs with phrases like "Inc. we trust," and "the Bible is not a healthcare plan."...

..."This issue isn't just about the devout Baptist CEOs of Hobby Lobby being allowed to refuse to cover emergency contraceptives and intrauterine devices based on their sincerely held belief that they facilitate abortion, it's about setting a dangerous legal precedent that could allow other CEOs of for profit corporations to refuse to cover all types of health care based on their religious beliefs," said Amanda Scott, member of the Mobile Atheist community....

83. Kansas Young Democrats hold protest in Lawrence

Protesters demonstrate in front of Lawrence Hobby Lobby over company’s stance on birth control
By Giles Bruce
July 7, 2014

A few dozen people protested in front of the Lawrence Hobby Lobby store Monday in response to the company's involvement in a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that allowed family-owned corporations to refuse to pay for their employees' birth control if they have religious objections.

Abigail Stallbaumer, Topeka, pumps her fist as she and other protesters solicit support from motorists during a protest Monday outside Hobby Lobby, 1801 W 23rd St. At the height of the demonstration, about 40 protesters lined the sidewalk with signs objecting to the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that enables closely held companies like Hobby Lobby to remove coverage for women's birth control from their employee health care plans citing infringements upon the company owner's religious beliefs.

As passing motorists on 23rd Street waved and honked, about 40 protesters held signs with slogans like "Get a Better Hobby," "Not my Boss's Business" and several that are unprintable here.... [Hmmm... I wonder what that means?]

...In response, the Kansas Young Democrats organized Monday's protest, which was later joined by Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Missouri and members of the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, among others.
