Arsenic in Our Chicken?

It turns out that arsenic has routinely been fed to poultry (and sometimes hogs) because it reduces infections and makes flesh an appetizing shade of pink. Theres no evidence that such low levels of arsenic harm either chickens or the people eating them, but still...
Big Ag doesnt advertise the chemicals it stuffs into animals, so the scientists conducting these studies figured out a clever way to detect them. Bird feathers, like human fingernails, accumulate chemicals and drugs that an animal is exposed to. So scientists from Johns Hopkins University and Arizona State University examined feather meal a poultry byproduct made of feathers.
One study, just published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, Environmental Science & Technology, found that feather meal routinely contained a banned class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. These antibiotics (such as Cipro), are illegal in poultry production because they can breed antibiotic-resistant superbugs that harm humans. Already, antibiotic-resistant infections kill more Americans annually than AIDS, according to the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
The same study also found that one-third of feather-meal samples contained an antihistamine that is the active ingredient of Benadryl. The great majority of feather meal contained acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol. And feather-meal samples from China contained an antidepressant that is the active ingredient in Prozac.

(21,846 posts)The last few times I bought chicken it just smelled funny. Even my cats wouldn't eat it.
I got the chicken at Waldbaum's in NY and I'm sure it must have been factory-farmed.

(24,135 posts)regular chicks look sickly and I know what they pump into them.
My next door neighbor makes her kids drink milk everyday and the girl already has her period and rather large boobs for an 11 year old.
doesn't have this in it yeah? Hope not. We only eat organic chicken and drink organic milk. Don't really consume much of either though because my son really only wants to eat black beans and rice and strawberries.

(5,029 posts)Years ago I talked to a chicken farmer in Alabama. He said that before they started feeding them the feed with the arsenic, if a bird died, he'd just toss it out and within a few hours a wild animal would carry it off to eat. After he started feeding them the arsenic laced feed when a chicken died and he tossed it out nothing would touch it. It would sit there until it rotted or he buried it. So foxes and coyotes are smart enough not to eat the chickens, but we eat them all the time.
We pretty much only eat organic meat any more. Yes, it's more expensive, but I think in the long run it will be cheaper in terms of medical bills.

mini-unblock led the way, he has never had meat or poultry in his life.
of course, fish and veggies are hardly pure goodness these days, either. mercury, e. coli, gmo, etc.
our entire food supply is rotten to the core.
