The parents of Kendrec McDade, an unarmed black man shot and killed by Pasadena police officers last month, have filed a lawsuit in federal court against the City of Pasadena, the police chief and the officers involved, claiming wrongful death and violation of civil rights.
The lawsuit says that a pattern of abuse by the Police Department led in part to the death of Mr. McDade, 19, and it lists other episodes in recent years in which black men were injured or killed during encounters with the police. The police were pursuing Mr. McDade after a 911 caller reported he had been robbed at gunpoint by two young black men. The police said Mr. McDade was shot after reaching for his waistband, causing officers to believe he was armed.
