Safety Advisory: What to Do if You're Somewhere and You See a Person

or people carrying semi-auto weapons:

Call 911! You have no competence to judge whether such people are simply "exercising their 2nd Amendment rights" or whether they're the next mass shooter(s) who will generate some horrific national media coverage. You simply do not know, and cannot be expected to know. Don't assume anything. Let the authorities sort it out.

You've seen the posters: "If You See Something, Say Something!" There's a reason for those posters. Make the call.

When you call:

Stay calm.

When the operator asks, "What is your emergency?" say, "I'm at {location} and there {is a man} {are men} carrying {a military-style rifle} {military-style rifles} walking around. I don't know why they're doing that and I'm very concerned."

The operator will ask for your name. Say your name. Nobody will share your name with the gun-toters.

Say, "I'm very concerned that this could be a dangerous situation and I'm worried about a mass shooting happening here."

The operator will ask exactly where you are at the location. Describe it as clearly as you can. An aisle number or some other identifiable landmark. The operator will suggest that you move to a safer location. Do so. If you are asked to stay on the phone, stay on the phone. The operator may ask you other questions. Answer completely and calmly.

If you make the call in that way, they will dispatch a unit to the location. They have to. You're not hysterical, and you've provided accurate information and identified yourself. They have no choice, because they don't know the intent of the armed people either. The police will arrive, locate the armed individuals and find out what their intent is. They have to. They're not going to blow off your call, because it is recorded. They're not going to take a chance that some mass shooting will occur and it is discovered that they didn't respond. They will come and investigate your report.

The result will be that you will have done the right thing. The owners of that location will not be happy that the police came and disrupted business. That will help them make a no firearms policy for their location.

And that will be the end of your participation, in all probability. You won't be contacted further. Everything will be resolved by the police officers who respond, one way or another. If the people with the firearms mean no harm, they will be free to go on their way, if they are breaking no laws.

we see it and are uncomfortable when we head out on vacation. We haven't had to deal with that in Delaware, but we're heading south for our family trip, and wanted to all be on the same page if we run into something similar. Hopefully we don't run into any issues in our campgrounds we'll be staying at.

It's not uncommon, really. Depends on the state, really. I hope they're not in the next spot, though. If they are, just move. That's not one of the situations that would cause me to call 911, though. People camping sometimes have firearms.

was shot in the more 'permanent' area of the campground. Luckily we had only been there one night and were heading out that morning. We didn't hear any shooting at night, but saw the crime scene tape and cops when we left.

Don't think we'll be back to that campground. It WAS really convenient (right off the highway), decent pull-throughs, etc. We had been spooked the night before when setting up because of the huge pine trees swaying in a really bad storm (the year before a tree had fallen through our house during Sandy). Then spooked again in the a.m. when we were packing up to leave due to the police presence.

My stupid ass BIL was packing when he and my SIL came camping with us in our trailer several years back. I was sooo pissed at him because 1) He didn't let my husband or I know he had it (I would have understood - we were camping in bear country AND there was a shooting range nearby) and 2) his idea of a safe place to store his glock was between the towels in our linen closet. I was soooo pissed at him because we had our 2 kids - 9 and 3yo with us at the time. There were better places out of reach that he could have put it.

As much as I would prefer some good, old-fashioned public ridicule, there's always the risk that the gun-waver's intentions are less than noble.

Some even go full regalia with vests, web belts, etc., which should also be described in a 911 call.

I guess what I'll do if I'm ever in that situation and I see one of these half-witted yahoos walking in with a weapon, high-caliber rifle like that, I'll just put on a berserk act. I will just start screaming Gun! Gun! Gun! Watch out, everybody hit the deck! Guns! Guns! Everybody! And then dial 911 and I will say, shots fired, which will bring every g**-damned cop within 15 miles. And then the half-wits with the long guns are going to panic and they're going to run out of the store and if that rifle isn't shouldered properly, the cop is going to take a look at that and put a bullet right in their forehead.
