When the low profile European countries advance, people forget about them when the big ones falter.

But even with this, Europe is streets ahead due to the awful South American politics. The US did well because it was willing to take a foreign manager and give him a free hand. The SA countries would do so much better if they hired the best managers available rather than hire (and choose the squads) based on domestic politics. They have too much talent to go out like this.

This is football politics.

Last World Cup they wasted Argentina by hiring Diego Maradonna. The greatest player ever but can't coach a lick. They hired him to play to the fans. They choose lineups to play to the fans. Scolari is a fossil. This isn't 2002. Hopefully Argentina won't pay for their selections, ie Romero over Willy Caballero (because Messi doesn't like Caballero).

20 years ago, this was fine. But now football is so much more about organization at the back. They need to stop picking managers and players based on sentimentality, and who played where, and who dissed whom, and who pissed off the superstar players, etc. That's the politics of football.

BainsBane

I'll grant you Maradonna. You're certainly right that Brazil has no organization. They depend far too much on their star players. What a humiliation. I first watched soccer when I lived in Brazil during the 1994 World Cup, their fouth time winning the title. I can only imagine how Brazilians will react to this. And now the players have to stay around for the third place game. I pity them.

the only game I watched was last weekend between Argentina and Belgium.

I've never watched a soccer game before then. It was clear to me that both teams had brilliant players, but Argentina was just superior enough to keep Belgium from scoring a goal. Pundits said it was about working as a team. I'm not knowledgeable enough to weigh in on that.

And I'm really confused regarding how nobody scores by the end of the game, (0 to 0) but one team comes out the winner. Like in Holland and Costa Rica. Huh? I just don't get that.

I didn't get to see it, but I was cheering on the Dutch for family bias, but I didn't understand how they were declared the winner in that match.

My 5 year old granddaughter got to watch the game with family in Holland. She's smitten with whole soccer thing. Loves the camaraderie and enthusiasm and all that. gonna be interesting to see where that passion will lead to one day.

Penalty shootouts, properly known as "kicks from the penalty mark" and a nickname of "spot kicks" usually occur in knock-out tournaments or cup competitions. After 90 minutes or extra-time, when the two teams are level, each team will alternate five penalty kicks. If one team is not ahead on goals after these five kicks, the teams proceed to sudden death.

Louis van Gaal shows golden touch as Tim Krul antics spook Costa Rica

And the Old Trafford-bound Van Gaal’s bold gamble in sending on Tim Krul for Jasper Cillessen just before the end of 120 at first excruciating, then absorbing and ultimately dramatic minutes had been seven weeks in the making.

That is how long the imposing Newcastle United goalkeeper had been studying the penalty takers of the other teams in the competition. The scheme, cooked up by Van Gaal with the goalkeeping coach, Frans Hoek, was based on cold, hard logic.

With the plan kept secret from the other players, Krul was taken aside shortly before kick-off to explain that he would be called on if the match went to penalties. Krul had saved two penalties of his last 20. The 25-year-old Cillessen had saved none of the 16 faced in his career.

As Costa Rica’s exhausted players lined up on the halfway line on their knees and Holland’s put their arms round one another, Krul began psyching out each opponent by telling them he knew where they would put the ball. And he did, going the right way every time.

In the quarter-finals, the first replayed match in World Cup history took place, when Italy and Spain drew 1–1 after extra time. The match was played in a highly aggressive manner with several players of both sides injured: rough play injured the Spanish goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora in the first match, leaving him unable to participate in the replay, while on the other side even rougher play by Spaniards broke the leg of the Italian Mario Pizziolo who would not play in the national team again.[17] Italy won the replay 1–0, their play so physical that at least three Spaniards had to depart the field with injuries.[18] Italy then went on to beat Austria in the semi-finals by the same score. Meanwhile, Czechoslovakia secured their place in the final by beating Germany 3–1.

Before the World Cup, the only real international football tournament was at the Olympics, of which Great Britain won the first four (two as basically club sides under the British flag), while Uruguay waltzed away with the top prize in 1924 and 1928, just as they did with the first official FIFA jamboree in 1930.

After the 1928 games, FIFA held a "consolation tournament" for a few of the unlucky teams that didn't strike gold.

If this whole affair wasn't bizarre enough, hosts Netherlands faced Chile in the final and the visitors were impudent enough to score an 89th-minute equaliser to claim a 2-2 draw, which obviously then meant there was a requirement to decide who had won this invented, phony trophy. With the concept of the penalty shootout still some years away and nobody really with the inclination to stage a replay, the drawing of lots was employed -- and would you believe it, the Dutch hosts came up trumps. However, possibly out of embarrassment about this whole farcical hoopla or alternatively plain-old good sportsmanship, they graciously awarded the cup to Chile; presumably accompanied by a patronising pat on the head.
