(2,188 posts)Now, Goldwater vs. McGovern in 1972! That would have been a hell of a match, because one was viewed as too far-right and the other too far-left. Someone's got to win, right? At least the voters would have had a clear choice.

(17,183 posts)Nixon started the "Silent Majority" blather. He was a rightist with a left-controlled Congress, so he was forced into acts (EPA, e.g.) that he probably would have preferred to avoid. However, I will agree that Reagan was even farther to the right. Say Reagan was 10% and Nixon more like 30%. Of course, the idiots now are into negative numbers...
