As a hispanic (Puerto Rican descent) it's sad that I even have to worry about this stuff. But I'm thinking of taking a job in North GA and I'll be commuting about an hour each way. I don't want to be hassled by cops for the color of my skin.
I recently found out about the DWH law in Alabama so I won't be attending any of my inlaws family reunions because I'm afraid of being harassed by police.
I'm starting feel like our country has really become a place where non white Americans are not welcome especially in the south.
My father, grandfather and all my uncles on both sides of my family fought in word war II and vietnam so it's really sad that their child has to worry about this crap.

(30,947 posts)My brother-in-law is Puerto Rican and Cuban and has never had any run-ins with the law. But, of course, he and my sister live in the mountains of North Georgia in Ellijay.

(15,648 posts)But my parents have mentioned a few people from their church getting hassled, but that's in an area that notoriously hassles motorists in general.

(53,661 posts)Because of the laws passed, and fruit rotting. That I heard from an attorney who lives in GA and was against it. You might be able to get answers from the GA state group. Here's thread from there:

I used to chat with a Latina whose husband drove a big rig and had to show papers, but she was never bothered. That may have been just because it was a big truck.

(1,819 posts)they have that law and I won't be going to Alabama anytime. I know there some pretty draconian imigration laws in GA too but I'm just worried about the driving law were they can stop you and ask for documentation of citizenry. I'm afraid I won't keep my cool and get really angry at some cop just following the law. But I have a very thin skin for that sort of thing.

(11,689 posts)And I'm in rural Georgia, which would be worse than metro Atlanta. Atlanta has quite the Hispanic neighborhood along Buford Highway. My ESL students talk about driving to Atlanta all the time, never heard of any hassles or DWH troubles.
