(6,324 posts)It looks like it will be an association of employees, but without legal collective bargaining authority and only voluntary membership.
That makes it just like public sector unions are here in NC, where by law they can't have collective bargaining authority. Weak, with no real power and more like a fraternal organization than a real union.

(6,324 posts)You are still required to pay your "fair share" of what the union spends to bargain on your behalf, because you get employed under the terms of the deal the union makes even if you don't want to join. But the Supreme Court just landed a first blow toward demolishing that.
Since it looks like they don't have bargaining authority, that means nobody will be compelled to pay if they don't want to.
In short, it will be exactly like state and municipal employees are here in NC. Call itself a union, be more of a workers association with no power.

(11,481 posts)That VW plant is still officially unorganized. This is more of foot in the door tactic. Apparently in the early days of organizing they did this kind of voluntary union. VW will probably give some power to this local in some areas (probably something similar to a works council, but unofficial), then hope that more people join up and shoot for another vote.
