Both pilots are reported to have ejected successfully but heavy fire on the scene is preventing quick confirmation of injuries from the apartment complex into which it crashed.

Years ago the area around NAS Oceana (where the F-18 was most likely from)was mostly farming country. But that's changed and even when I returned to Dam Neck, Va. for more schooling back in the 80's, I was amazed to see how much of the farmland had become suburbs. Even then I read articles and discussions about the possibility of an aircraft crashing into one of the newly built up areas around the naval airbase.

The base came pretty close to being shut down a few years back...The NIMBYs have gotten pretty loud (but not as loud as the super hornets), and in spite of our teabaggy local politicians, they know our regional bread is buttered with a lot of "Big Gummitt" dollars thanks to the Pentagon...

Of course, this is the same teabaggy city council and business cronies who for two decades allowed commercial and residential development to spread unchecked around the base, in the face of good sense...
