CNN Removes Reporter Diana Magnay From Israel-Gaza After 'Scum' Tweet

NEW YORK -- CNN has removed correspondent Diana Magnay from covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after she tweeted that Israelis who were cheering the bombing of Gaza, and who had allegedly threatened her, were “scum.”

“After being threatened and harassed before and during a liveshot, Diana reacted angrily on Twitter,” a CNN spokeswoman said in a statement to The Huffington Post.

“She deeply regrets the language used, which was aimed directly at those who had been targeting our crew," the spokeswoman continued. "She certainly meant no offense to anyone beyond that group, and she and CNN apologize for any offense that may have been taken.”

The spokeswoman said Magnay has been assigned to Moscow.

Magnay appeared on CNN Thursday from a hill overlooking the Israel-Gaza border. While she reported, Israelis could be heard near her cheering as missiles were fired at Gaza.

After the liveshot, Magnay tweeted: “Israelis on hill above Sderot cheer as bombs land on #gaza; threaten to ‘destroy our car if I say a word wrong’. Scum.” The tweet was quickly removed, but not before it had been retweeted more than 200 times.

The message itself is gone, but the retweets rage on.

"Scum". Those who would cheer, and threaten, violence. Yeah, I would say that fits.

. . . but is not exactly what CNN does. CNN aims to do viewpoint journalism -- rather like FOX -- only without a viewpoint.

and sympathize. That crowd deserved that appellation, but doing so is a huge, longstanding no-no for reporters. Do tell why you think this is about Jews.

Many Jews despise what Israel is and has been doing, just as many non-Jews do.

And there certainly is a right and wrong here, as someone else claimed there wasn't below. Ever since the Zionist's started moving in a hundred years or so ago and then the Western powers handed then a hunk of Palestinian land, there's been wrong done. I guess Lebanon is lucky the Zionist plans to expand into there didn't happen.

Secondly, your history is deficient. The Zionist movement started in earnest in the 19th century. Not to mention that you left out a great deal in your brief accounting.

Ugh. another ignorant and disgusting post. Oh, and before you call me an Israel apologist, I'd suggest you check out my posts on I/P.

We're back to that old question of where do you draw the lines? When is it criticism of Israeli policy and when is it just hating Jews?

I'm pretty critical of Israeli foreign policy, as of late, for what it's worth. Collective punishment is against the Geneva Convention.

I don't appreciated being insulted as a bigot. If you are going to do so, at least have the decency to follow up by explaining precisely what you mean.

How does posting a news story make me responsible for imposing collective blame?

I gurss this sort of cheering happens when there is such animosity between various ethnic and religious groups. I recall seeing video of Muslims in the U.S. cheering at the time of the terrorist attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon.
