O'Malley Petition Calling on Congress to Preserve Law Ensuring Children Can Make Case for Asylum
email from Martin O'Malley:
____ As a father of four, I cannot imagine the desperation some parents in Central America must feel before sending their children away, by themselves, to escape the gang violence that threatens their lives.
We are not a country that should rush to send children back to unstable places that are ravaged by violence.
Through all of our great world religions, we are told that hospitality to strangers is an essential human dignity. Those principles should guide our actions as we consider how to handle the crisis on our border.
Sign my petition calling on Congress to preserve the law that ensures these children are given the opportunity to make their case for asylum in front of an immigration judge.
Almost everyone outside of the most extreme fringes of the Tea Party agrees that we must do more to improve the conditions of their detention. But the question is, what happens next?
We have an obligation to make sure that these children are safe while they're here. Maryland is ready to step up. We are working with faith leaders, social services providers, and our federal partners so that we can do everything we can to care for these children.
But I also believe that the greatest power we have as a people is the power of our principles, and that we should not send these kids back without a chance for them to make a case that they fled their country for fear of violence.
