I wish there would be a spinoff movie of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

They could make a prequel about the rise of Willy Wonka.

Or maybe a movie about one of the other four children. Perhaps Veruca Salt, unquestionably the meanest and cruelest of the five kids, I think.

And no movie was made because crusty old Roald Dahl hated the Gene Wilder movie so much that he would not allow it.

5. The fact that Dahl hated Wilder's performance just floors me

Wilder was the perfect person for the part. To this day I haven't even bothered watching the recent "remake" of it with Depp.

I'm a Tim Burton and Johnny Depp fan. I did NOT like the movie, however.

Depp's character REEKED of pedophilia... I really disliked it.

I suppose someone was going to end up playing the part. It just goes to show remakes are not always worth it.

9. What killed that movie for me was the kids.

Absolute mail-ins, every one of them. Zero charisma, pedestrian to downright stuffy interpretations compared to the original children. The grandparents delivered more memorable performances.

But the Gene Wilder version that I grew up on will always be the one for me. His eccentricity always kept me guessing about his motives, intentions and I loved his tirade at the end (even though it was sort of a cruel way to test Charlie)

10. It's film bs. Dahl wanted Spike Milligan and did not get him. Dahl also disliked the changed focus

from Charlie to Willy and the altering of the Slugworth character. Of course the real and final reason no sequel was made was that the film was not successful at the box office. It made no money. It was not really popular until years after the original release.

11. But the original became a classic, it happens with many movies that did poorly at the box office

Maybe for the fun of it I'll make a thread over in the lounge for people to list movies like this. It is worth it in case people haven't seen them (which I'm sure there are tons I personally haven't seen, which would be great to add to my list).

Seemed like fantasy when the book was written.
