In one of the stupidest moves, from one of the stupidest politicians in the country, Rick Perry has called out the Texas national guard to "guard" the Mexican border.
They can't shoot the children coming across and they can't arrest them. It is nothing more than a political stunt to make the Perry look macho.
Most importantly, however, is that I hope they have not been given ammunition for their rifles. That would greatly increase the risk of one or more children being shot by some overly zealous imbecile.
Rachel Maddow covered the story last night. Here's the link.

(16,286 posts)WE know perry is stupid and ambitious and the same guy who actually wanted to do the right thing for immigration at one point
This bold move (stupid actually) will make him more popular with those who would vote for him anyway, and less popular with the 70% of americans who think he is a moron
But I give up on the american people having and using a brain, the chance that ONE republican can get elected in nov is bad enough, but i hear more than that will actually win...boy are we broken or what

(16,286 posts)I have been telling everyone for 5 yrs that we are at war with people who viciously hate America...
You see, they hate THIS America
the one with a Brown President and growing Latino population
the America they love is white
I deal with actual rightwing hate everyday in my personal life, they hate the Brown prez and they hate anyone who supports the Brown president

(67,089 posts)evident year after year. We have a strong core in this country that just has to have someone to hate. And many mask their pure hatred with religion, that giving them a cover to practice their hateful ideologies against whomever they choose, oh, in the game of god, Jesus, the bible and all of that bullshit they use for cover and to suck in the unsuspecting.

(16,286 posts)who say "we love the sinner and hate the sin"
while they say it, you can feel the hate oozing out of them for the sinner
now I dont consider being Gay a sin, in fact there is no such thing as sin as there is no such thing as god, but you know what i mean
hate, yep...it is what makes their ticks tock

(67,089 posts)singling out those for persecution. It is, a sexual sadistic hate fetish. I find it strange some spend their lives preoccupied with others genitals and behavior. They are sexual perverts with a hate fetish!

(9,067 posts)from my life in Florida, it's clear that "enforcing the boarder" is a minor issue. We don't have a boarder here, and it doesn't even slow down the boats on the beach!
There are many, many people here who come in on a visa of some kind and stay. The boarder issue is a red herring.
It's way past time to simply figure out a way to make them tax-paying citizens. Almost every contractor, farm, hotel, and restaurant here employees the undocumented without paying SSI or anything else. Florida would collapse if we didn't have these folks working here.

(15,027 posts)the nuclear codes nearby. Russia and China would probably go on full alert and stay there.
On a related topic, there's a story that during Nixon's final days, White House Chief of Staff, Alexander Hague, told the Pentagon to check with him before following any orders from Nixon. He feared that Nixon was totally unhinged.

(1,850 posts)I heard that border patrol agents were fired on by "high-caliber" weapons. Looked for a link, but could only find Fox News and other RW sites, so don't know if that's true or not. If it is, the NG may have been called out to protect the border patrol from the cartels.
Second, you really shouldn't refer to NG as "imbeciles." Most of them joined in order to be available to help their local communities in emergency situations. Unfair to label them "imbeciles," IMHO.

(15,027 posts)What I said was that "... some overly zealous imbecile ..." My guess is that there's probably about 1,000 guardsmen that have been called up. You don't think that one or more of them could fit my description?

(25,226 posts)What would they see? These soldiers will just be standing around not really being there for any useful purpose but to feed the ego of Perry.
Hopefully - the people of Texas would realize the big waste of their tax dollars for this stunt.

(82,849 posts)Well, except from their share of federal tax revenues. Gov. Perry is going to ask all of us to foot the bill for his grandstand stunt:

(10,340 posts)Every military operation has some sort of Rules of Engagement, which spell out whether or not they can carry loaded weapons, how they are allowed to react to various situations, and what are their rules for self-defense.
I'd be very curious to see what their ROE's are.

(15,027 posts)in 1970, the Ohio National Guard opened fire on students who were demonstrating against the Vietnam War. Four students were killed and nine were wounded. There was outrage from normal people and cheers from many conservatives led by the seemingly approving attitude of Nixon's White House. (It's all on Google.)
Given that we're talking about Texas and Perry, what could possibly go wrong?
Hugabear
(10,340 posts)Hopefully the National Guard commanders have some sort of restraint. My hope is that they see all of this as bullshit, taking them away from their normal training.
Of course, if their commanders are as right-wing and ambitious as Perry, then who knows.
