Paid vacation for the masses? James Melton: Hotels.com and a publicity stunt liberals can love

I know it’s an incredibly self-serving publicity stunt. But I like it anyway.

Dallas-based Hotels.com, an online accommodations booking service, has launched VacationEqualityProject.com, a website where visitors can learn about the importance of paid vacation and the discrepancy between the amounts offered in the United States compared with other developed countries. The site also encourages visitors to sign a petition asking the White House to take a position on guaranteed paid vacation time.

based in tourism dollars, having Americans who don't take vacation time or even have vacation time, is a real loss of revenue for many local economies. I would also think they would want to address wages as well. It doesn't matter how much vacation time you give someone, if they don't have the money to go on vacation, they would sit at their homes for 2 to 4 wks, or be able to sleep in before their 2nd job.

And a big part of our lack of reward is the ridiculous hours we are expected to work. It's counterproductive, but I guess it's cheaper and when you run a big company I guess that's the main thing.

mandatory and that people actually have to take that time off by law, is something that congress does need to pass. It would be interesting to see the fight between tourism biz and biz that doesn't want to provide a vacation.
