Holocaust survivor speaks out for Gaza. Amazing statement.

Found at Twitter

I looked up more about Reuven Moskovitz and found this article from 2010. He is quite an activist. From BBC

Jewish activists sail to Gaza in defiance of blockade

Richard Kuper, a member of the UK-based organising group Jews for Justice for Palestinians, said it was a symbolic act of protest and also a message of solidarity to "Palestinians and Israelis who seek peace and justice".

"This is a non-violent action," he said.

"We aim to reach Gaza, but our activists will not engage in any physical confrontation and will therefore not present the Israelis with any reason or excuse to use physical force or assault them."

Among the activists is 82-year-old Holocaust survivor Reuven Moskovitz.

"It is a sacred duty for me, as a (Holocaust) survivor, to protest against the persecution, the oppression and the imprisonment of so many people in Gaza, including more than 800,000 children," he said.

Well said, Mr. Moskovitz.

bit hard to call him anti Semitic... if a Holocaust survivor compares what the Israeli army is doing to what the Nazi's did to him. Something isn't right. This isn't how one engages terrorists by becoming terrorists.

Tremendous moral weight here.

Sometimes, in the bombast of a media mostly controlled by corporate interests, we forget how many are actually trying to do right.

Our neighborhood was an interesting mix, and right up the street from us was a small home-based Synagogue of an orthodox group. Kids being kids, and somewhat dumb, my friends and I made a lot of noise on Saturday mornings when the funny-looking folks who were different than us congregated there.

My mother told us to pipe down, they were going to church, and how would we like it if a bunch of noisy people interrupted Mass? (Truthfully, I wouldn't have minded... but I sorta got the point.) But, being kids, it didn't stick and we were repeat offenders.

My mother (I think now after some consultation with the Rabbi and his family) decided that rather than doing extra chores or docking my allowance, I'd have to learn about what went on at the Synagogue. The Rabbi was really very nice. He didn't try to explain theology or anything like that. He just noted that although they worshiped on a different day, the Synagogue was the same for the Jews as our Church was for our families, and patiently answered questions about why it just looked like an ordinary house from the outside.

And in so doing, he noted that Jews had been persecuted for being different for many hundreds of years, culminating in the horror of World War II and the concentration camps.

Later I got to know other members of the community (there was a FABULOUS deli in the neighborhood...) and became interested in Judaism. I read books, and studied, and was deeply impressed by the quiet determination of neighbors who were involved in the Civil Rights struggles of my childhood, the Anti-Defamation League (back then, Jews could be barred from clubs and openly discriminated against in employment and other areas,) in Union organizing and support of labor, and in the DFL party.

So many of them seemed to share a sense of higher purpose in making the world a place where such things as the holocaust could never happen again, to ANYONE.

I think they would stand beside Mr. Moskovitz.

sadly,
Bright

By the strength of his character and the power of his moral convictions, he advocates for Gazans and shames Israel's aggression.

I hope he lives to see justice and peace in that blighted region.

For years, I've been arguing that Israel is a 21st Century Apartheid--and it's being maintained by people who should know better! Jews have been oppressed, restricted, called sub-human, locked away, tortured and killed just for who they are. That's the worst shame in this: there's no empathy.

OTOH: I don't know about you, but family members have stopped talking to me, still believing the Zionist crap and certain that Israelis are the victims here. So it's wonderful to see other like-minded MOT's who get it.

I recall some Congress Critter a few years ago (a gentile, but his name escapes me) talking about the divide between liberal and conservative Jews. Obvious he thought us Libs were an abomination--but in reality, we are the ones who manifest the cultural ideas in society. Critical thinking being the first! Anyone with half a brain understands that humans need each other, we need to make peace and work out compromises. You can leave God out of the equation and still realize how essential those concepts are!

I had a very dear friend a few years ago who is Jewish and a lovely person. She and her husband visited Israel and returned disgusted and appalled by what they encountered. She said that the small minds in that country told her that she and her husband were not "real" Jews because they did not live in Israel! This is what we are dealing with! Incredible arrogance and a phony sense of complete superiority! Why we support this country is beyond me!

the killing of palestinians must stop. what does israel gain by perpetrating the same as what was done to them over and over again in the past? the killing of children and innocent civilians is not forgotten nor forgiven.

If there is any group on the entire planet that should have compassion for the plight of the Palestinian people it should he those of Jewish faith.

It makes the atrocities of Israel that much worse.

Among other things, this offers a ray of hope for humanity and reason which is so lacking HERE on this matter. Of course, they will smear him with the ridiculous smear: "Self Hating Jew".

But people who say that in my book are savage, bigoted monsters.

They left their 'homeland' and traveled the earth intentionally. The holocaust has them spinning, so they go 'home'. They have to create a state.

So fundamental. What's going on that they can't extend this truth to the Palestinians?
