33% of the EU's oil comes from Russia, and 32% of natural gas. The USA is self-sufficient in natural gas and most US oil imports come from Canada and Mexico. If the impact of sanctions is that they cause a recession while having a lesser effect on Russia? Then I'm not sure why sanctioning Russia is supposed to be the most obvious thing that Europe should be doing (it may be obvious to Americans who are rather ignorant of the realities involved, I suppose).
