Quick: Can you guess how many financial prophets and tech pundits were completely, I mean 100%, jaw-droppingly wrong about the first iPad, in the months leading up to its release? How many said it was a massive misstep, sure to be an embarrassing flop for Steve Jobs, given how there is no imaginable use for what amounts to an engorged iPod Touch that can’t even make phone calls?

Wait, before you answer: Do you know how many of those same pundits hurled even more dramatically lunk-headed, derogatory invectives at the prospect of an Apple-made cellphone, just a few years prior? How many openly scoffed at Apple’s gall to try and make a dent in the hotly contested cellphone market dominated by Nokia, Motorola and Blackberry? Jobs and his titanic ego were in for an epic smackdown. For certain.

If you said “all of them,” you’re just about exactly right. I remember it fondly: the iPad was easily the most pre-trashed, WTF-is-Steve-thinking hunk of modern tech in the last 20 years… except for the iPhone, which was, in its way, even more baffling to the punditry at large – because no one had ever seen anything like it before. Or imagined it. Or even tried to.
You know what happened next.
