(14,255 posts)Because Hamas might be hiding anywhere. And when all is reduced to smoking rubble, new settlements will be built on the ashes.
We will probably pay for the clean-up and construction.
edited to add - someone elsewhere on DU said Netanyahu would be really really pissed off if tourist dollars were affected. Guess they were right.

(17,064 posts)... Obama should have announced a halt to ALL aid to Israel. Furthermore, US should have condemned the Israeli slaughter of civilians in the UN, and stated we would NOT block any Security Council resolutions inre Israel.
At this point, Israel has used US supplied arms to kill more children then the Russian supplied Ukrainian separitists used to kill civilian air travellers. Putin has been widely condemned, where is the criticism of Obama?

In response to charge that #Israel hit a UN school today, its military says rockets fired by Hamas landed inside #Gaza in the area of school

(14,733 posts)First, there were reports that Israel was disavowing the attack, and claiming it was Hamas shelling the place. Then, no more than 20 minutes later, supposedly Israel was saying those in theschool were given 4 hours notice to evacuate. Those two sets of statements seem to not go together to me. Israel wouldn't be giving 4 hours notice of a Hamas strike.

(72,631 posts)United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his horror at the attack on the school at Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza strip. "Many have been killed - including women and children, as well as U.N. staff," he said in a statement. "Circumstances are still unclear. I strongly condemn this act."
The Israeli military said its troops were fighting gunmen from Hamas, which runs Gaza, in the area and that it was investigating the incident. A spokesman for the U.N. relief agency said it had tried in vain to arrange an evacuation of civilians from the school with the Israeli army, and noted reports of Hamas rockets falling in the area at the same time.
Pools of blood lay on the ground and on students' desks in the courtyard of the school near the apparent impact mark of the shell, according to a Reuters photographer at the scene.
Scores of crying families who had been living in the school ran with their children to a hospital where the victims were being treated a few hundred meters away. Laila Al-Shinbari, a woman who was at the school when it was shelled, told Reuters that families had gathered in the courtyard expecting to be evacuated shortly in a Red Cross convoy.
"All of us sat in one place when suddenly four shells landed on our heads ... Bodies were on the ground, (there was) blood and screams. My son is dead and all my relatives are wounded including my other kids," she wept.

(8,646 posts)On CBC news here in Canada they just had an interview with the director of UNRWA operations in Gaza and he said the school had been a designated emergency shelter and that the coordinates of the school had been given to Israeli authorities on 12 separate occasions, the most recent occasion was at 10:50 this morning. He said they were fully aware this school was a shelter.
ugh.
