Wisconsin -Gov Walker Admin-to stop enforcing birth control law http://fondul.ac/1rCqp6C #wipolitics #wiunion
MADISON Gov. Scott Walkers administration will no longer enforce the states contraception coverage law for employers with religious objections following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last month.
The decision riled birth control advocates and Democrats, who said Wednesday that Wisconsin law is not affected by the decision.
The Supreme Court ruled that companies with religious objections, like Hobby Lobby, can avoid the contraceptives requirement of the federal health care overhaul law.
Wisconsin Insurance Commissioners office spokesman J.P. Wieske said Wednesday that the state had no decision to make because it is federally pre-empted from enforcing the law............

MADISON This week, the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI) under Governor Walkers administration announced via a media interview that the state will no longer enforce Wisconsins birth control coverage law (Wis stat. 632.895(17)) that ensures prescription drug plans cover birth control the same as other prescription drugs. Governor Walker justified this move in light of the Hobby Lobby decision by the Supreme Court in June. Legal experts with the National Womens Law Center, however, have released an analysis that concludes the Hobby Lobby ruling does not invalidate Wisconsins contraceptive coverage law and it must therefore be enforced. The Walker Administrations move is just the latest in a long line of efforts to reduce womens access to everything from sex education, cancer screens, and birth control to safe and legal abortion.
Governor Walkers latest effort to unilaterally end the enforcement of Wisconsins birth control law without legislative action shows just how far he is willing to go to restrict womens access to essential health care, stated Tanya Atkinson, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin. Since taking office, Governor Walker has initiated and/or signed into law an unprecedented number of laws and policies that compromise womens health and wellbeing. Despite the proven benefits of affordable birth control access for women and their employers, and the overwhelming public support for birth control coverage, its unbelievable that we are still fighting for access to birth control in 2014........
BACKGROUND
Birth control is basic health care and used by 99 percent of women at some point in their lives, yet before the passage of laws like Wisconsins Contraceptive Coverage Law in 2009, many health insurance plans deliberately excluded coverage for contraceptives. Before this inequity was addressed, women of reproductive age were forced to pay as much as 68 percent more for out-of-pocket medical care than men. For each woman supplied with prescription contraceptive coverage over a five-year period, insurance companies save a minimum of $10,000 because of the costs associated with unintended pregnancy (Population Connection, Contraception Equity: What You Need to Know, 6/21/2007).............

(70,182 posts)Lots of them in Wisconsin and they do get out the vote.
I do think they are running scared about November--especially now that the new Marquette poll that them neck and neck. Actually Burke is up by one pt amongst likely voters. It is imperative that women get out and vote.
I think Burke is leading amongst 'young' voters--those who are apt to use birth control more often. If companies in Wisconsin start denying this health benefit--this might awaken a few. Guess I get cynical at times.

Any lawsuit will be challenged till it ends up in the SCOTUS, which has made its own precedent with the Hobby Lobby ruling.

Governor Scott Walker
Never before have we had a governor so quickly advance polices that reduce womens access to information and affordable health care services, especially during a time of economic crisis.
Never before have we had a governor defund Planned Parenthood, putting thousands of patients at risk of losing health care services.
Never before have we had a governor work so hard to limit women's access to birth control, going so far as to eliminate "contraceptives" from the list of services that should be included in a woman's health program.
And never before have we had a governor so out of touch with the needs of Wisconsin residents.
While governor, Scott Walker has:
Kicked over 200,000 Wisconsin women, children, and families off BadgerCare.............
