RainDog is dead

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I knew her a little bit in real life - I met her on DU.

A good friend of hers posted about it on Facebook this morning. I messaged the friend and she said that 'RainDog' died yesterday.

She had posted about being in pain, and being depressed in recent weeks.

She was quite a lover of books and music.

This is from a blog that she contributed to:

Just this. - with none of the fancy guitar pyrotechnics, the walls of guitars, without the show. Just this simple dirge carried by a rhetorically profound irony ... With every mistake we must surely be learning. Surely. Gently weep.

((raindog))

We met after my Mother and I passed out news articles, (mainstream ala nyt) about concerns in the lead up to the war in Iraq, at the local farmer's market.

Later that day she posted about someone handing out news articles at her local farmer's market.

We met for coffee later that week.

I always counted on wise, passionate, yet tempered words when she weighed in on topics.

What a deep loss for our communities (DU and local.)

If you knew her well enough to ask, you'd know the cause of the death or would have been told.

I am very tired of Nosey Parkers demanding to know the cause if my mother's death. If only they had showed that much interest in her while she was living, but no, I'm not going to feed their need for gossip. Cause of death was Nunya Business.

But, I do not believe those who ask mean any harm.

Death, especially sudden, unexpected death is just so hard to fathom sometimes. I guess that the questions are only natural, if painful for those closest to the loss.

But to ask the family and those close to the deceased what the manner of death was - especially so soon after - is so unimportant; the manner of life is what matters.

Those who were closest to the deceased know or were told; everyone else's curiosity can wait.

My mother died May 21 and I am getting emails from people who barely knew her wanting to know "how." I cannot imagine asking someone in mourning that was not a close relation or friend that question. I'd rather err on the side of not asking if it spares Raindog's family and friends the same feelings and pain. They have other things to do than satisfy the curiosity of strangers.

the gatekeeper for anyone save your own family. That's not to say that your POV isn't understood. But people do wonder and it's wrong to assume they have "bad motives" for so doing. Unless RainDog was a family member, you shouldn't be finger wagging at those of us who wonder why this happened.

A lot of us knew this poster because she was such a strong advocate for legalization. It's only natural to wonder if that battle and her battles converged.

If that is the case, that doesn't detract or denigrate in any way. It merely increases the empathy quotient.

This just cut me to the bone.

She was one of my favorite DUers.

As some of you know, been having a tough time myself and can't be here very much until things get resolved. I know the deep feelings of worthlessness our society heaps on those of us who aren't wealthy or physically perfect.

It kills me that Raindog is gone because of politics and social attitudes that degrade the soul, dehumanize the human, undervalue and undercompensate those who work so, so hard.

Be kind to those you know who are poor and struggling. Send them a few bucks. Get off your high horse and realize they probably work their asses off and your snubbing and judgmental attitudes about their position in life are SOUL-KILLING.

There are many on DU who aren't insufferable snobs, many who will help a fellow person in need, but those of you who are insufferable snobs know who you are. Help somebody else you know who is suffering as Rain Dog suffered. That's what she would want from you right now.

I loved you, RE Paris.

May you find the peace and acceptance you sought but never found in this corrupt, greedy world

to all who knew and loved her.

I never met RainDog in-person, but her presence in a thread here at DU was a sure sign that it was worth reading. I knew her as a calm, reasoned, compassionate, and reliably progressive presence here.

She will be missed. Condolences to all her family and close friends.

I keep hoping that it was a mistake and she will show up on the thread.

But I know better.

I am wishing the strength to her children.

I've been in tears on and off ever since I saw this news.

I've lost two partners to sudden death, 12 years apart - said good-bye to them in the morning, and before the day was done they were gone. It's just awful, there's no way around the pain of it.

I'm sure a good soul like Raindog IS at peace on the other side.

225. Why we are/were the Democratic UNDERGROUND...
Fri Jul 25, 2014, 11:25 AM
Jul 2014

I guess, compared to Raindog, I'm a late joiner..I came to DU in 2003...I had been working 12-14 hour days as a Manufacturer's rep prior to do that and traveled in areas where the only radio reception I could get was right-wing nuttery of Limbaugh (who was the "darling" of the airwaves in those days)...

I felt the outrage of the 2000 election. I gasped with fear over the reaction to 9/11/01 and knew that the world would change...and yet, I was too busy with my life to "get involved"..

I left the job in 03 just before the invasion of Iraq...and when that happened I had to find an outlet for my outrage...I was surrounded by Bush sympathizers and good, loyal "patriots" who bought Bush and Cheney's lies without question and I felt alone and isolated.

Anybody who questioned Bush's motives was branded...either as unpatriotic or a muslin sympathizer or communist or worse...It was only when I found DU that I found that I wasn't alone...

I once worked for a Republican office-holder who said that in his part of the state, Democrats must "travel by night and live off the land". That's how it was for any Democrat in 01-02 and 03....we were despised by many

To have an "underground" where we could band together, find and share ways to fight the lies and hatred being generated by the right wing was a god-send to me and, I suppose to many like Raindog...

Newer folks won't understand that blogging wasn't as prevalent in those times as it is today...to communicate via the internet was new and exciting...radical...and UNDERGROUND!

I appreciate DU for what it gave me and my friends in those times.

I was connected to DU quite a bit back in the days of Bush. It was nice to have an online progressive community to be a connected with. I learned a lot from folks here.

I have gotten away from it in recent years. I still check in from time to time, but not nearly as much.

RainDog and I both love(d) jazz. I would see her sometimes at the local jazz dive.

and found that a lot had been added to it, so it's hard to find the place I was referring to. Here's what it says:

"According to her son, Eric, she began having trouble breathing at home Wednesday morning. She managed to call for an ambulance but by the time it arrived, it was pretty much too late. No details yet on why she had trouble breathing, although she’d been physically ill for a while, thanks in large part to being too broke to afford health insurance premiums."

They have also posted a more recent photo of her, and a link to her obituary.
