I watched the news this morning ...

for less than a half hour; then, turned off the TV and turned on my Miles Davis CD rotation: The Essential Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Miles & Quincy-Live at Montreux, and ending with, A Tribute to Miles by Hancock, Shorter, Carter, Roney and Williams. (Yes, I still have a CD player!)

As I was doing my alternate morning routine, I appealed to the Universe that it be revealed to the world's "leaders", that:

A climate for Peace is not developed by creating widows, widower, and orphans, even with the violence being called/justified as self-defense or revenge.

ETA: Today will be a "news-less" today.

The Essential Miles Davis CD has Miles Runs The Voodoo Down (one of my favorites).

Funny story ...

BabyGirl 1SBM came home one evening about 7 years ago to tell me about this "crazy song" (Miles Runs The Voodoo Down) that (she) heard in school by some guy named "Miles". She wanted me to take her to the store, right then, because, "Dad, I've got to have it."

I told her to save her money ... and she marched out of the room, to her bedroom, before I could tell her to look in the CD rack. So I just dropped it in and cranked it up. (We were friends again!)

Bitches Brew was the first jazz album I bought. When I first played it I thought what the heck. It sat on my CD rack for 15 years until I watched the Ken Burns documentary and really got onto jazz. Now it's one of my favorite jazz albums along with A Love Supreme and some other live Coltrane.

Great story by the way.

Love it! She probably didn't realize what great musical taste her own father had until that moment!

Good thread. Sometimes I just have to put a DVD on, or my kid's band's music, or the Food Network (unless that annoying obnoxious guy fieri is on), or "Pawn Stars" or some such, and turn the news OFF for awhile. Or go take the dog to the dog park or something.

OR, my new favorite game these days that I play - "what would I do if I were made president of MSNBC or NBC News..."

Sometimes it just makes one CRAAAAAZYYYY!!!

My Dad is a music lover and I know my own tastes were strongly influenced by the music he played when we were young. It's one of the things I love about him, I'm sure your daughter will feel the same way about you.

Oh and the other happy side of the coin is when she brings you new music,
'Dad, I think you'll like this' and you do...

I read somewhere that peace is NOT the absence of war.

I remember Kucinich saying he would create a Department of Peace in the government. I think that is a splendid idea.

30. Are you aware that a film about Miles Davis is being made
Fri Jul 25, 2014, 01:10 PM
Jul 2014

as we speak?
Much of the filming was done in Cincinnati in the last few weeks.
As I recall, it will not be a full-fledged biography, but a film that depicts a slice of his life.
I don't recall the details, but perhaps Google will tell you more.

I was a fan of Miles Davis back to the mid-1950's. - Loved "Blue Again."
Think I'll pull it up on Youtube.
Thanks

I still have my dad's record album of this (and yes I still have a couple turntables ) -

I was always fascinated by the cover although I've seen other iterations of it. Dad was also a Coltrane fan and I have at least one of those and the "Song for my Father" Horace Silver (who just passed last month) album. Lots of Stan Getz in the collection too.

Edit to add that he was a big B.B. King fan and even had at least one reel-to-reel that he recorded back in the '50s or '60s that unfortunately got recorded over almost 45 years ago (by yours truly for need of a tape for a middle school "electronic music" class).

I hear ya about stepping away to reflect until the bleeding leading begins receding.

Don Cheadle IS Miles. No doubt about it. He has the gravitas to make the production and the role a winner.

An occasional news-less day is good for the soul.
