THE WORLD-HERALD
This year, Lee Terry came within 6 percentage points of losing the Republican nomination to a little-known GOP challenger, even though Terry had poured nearly $1 million into the race.

Lee Terry is part of a dwindling club — a club that few of his fellow members of Congress would ever willingly join.

Terry represents a swing district, one that is neither solidly Republican nor solidly Democratic. Unlike the vast majority of his congressional colleagues, Terry will have to fight for political survival for the foreseeable future, including a tough re-election battle in November.

That’s partly because of the numbers.

For the past several decades, the number of swing congressional districts has been on the decline as the country has become more polarized along red and blue lines. In 1998, 164 congressional districts were identified by the respected Cook Political Report as competitive.

I wish all 435 seats were competitive yeoman6987 Jul 2014 #1
With an unusually large turnout, many more districts could swing. MineralMan Jul 2014 #2

Yep I even wish that Nancy Pelosi at least had to fight some for her seat every two years. It is stunning to see that most of the folks in the seats don't have to do a thing to get reelected. And that fact that some seats don't even have a competitor is even worse.
