Starting a super PAC can really mess with your homework schedule.
Consider the day that the founder of Nebraskas newest political action committee got a message from the Nebraska Department of Labor while he sat in his Millard West High School homeroom. You need to buy workers compensation insurance, the message said.
Joe Gruber, 18, sighed, picked up his cellphone and dialed the state. No, his newly founded political action committee, named Extempers for Prosperity, doesnt have any employees. No, he does not plan to hire any employees. Can I go back to my homework now?
It worked out so we dont have to pay workers comp, which is nice, Gruber told me.
Gruber is doing quite a few things this summer, after graduating from Millard West. Hes getting up before dawn and trudging through wet corn fields while detasseling. Hes working evening shifts as a checker at Hy-Vee. Oh, and hes the co-founder, executive director and treasurer of Nebraskas newest super PAC, Extempers for Prosperity. His super PAC is meant to raise awareness about how dumb super PACs really are.
