Most of Gaza could be without power for at least a year

Gaza Power Plant Attacked By Israeli Tank Fire, Knocking Out Electricity To Gaza City
Reuters | By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Maayan Lubell

<...>

Thick black smoke rose from blazing fuel tanks at the power station that supplies up to two-thirds of Gaza's energy needs. The local energy authority said initial damage assessments suggested the plant could be out of action for a year.

Electricity was cut to the city of Gaza and many other parts of the Hamas-dominated territory after what officials said was Israeli tank shelling of the tanks containing some 3 million cubic liters of diesel fuel.

"The power plant is finished," said its director, Mohammed al-Sharif. An Israeli military spokeswoman had no immediate comment and said she was checking the report.

Gaza City municipality said damage to the station could halt many of the area's water pumps, and it urged residents to ration water consumption.

The rest of Gaza's electricity comes in from Egypt and Israel on regular transmission lines.

Of course, a couple of the lines from Israel are down because of a Hamas rocket misfire.

I wonder who the genius was on the Israeli side that decided to hold a firefight next to the power generating station? The IDF were in tanks, for crissakes: they could have just put into reverse and come back later.

Hamas won't suffer because of this: they're the ones with the money and guns. Israelis sure as hell won't. As usual, it will be the women and children and old people forced to scratch out an existence while the fucking bombs fall around them.
