hear anyone talking about gas prices. They are the ones trying to make up some false outrage and it's not going to work.

Gas was $1.46 when President Clinton left office.
The Saudi Royal Family fellating Bush Crime Family is to blame for our current gas prices.

(30,803 posts)the suggestion was floated that we have just been lucky, that Europe's gas prices have been high all along (and therefore it was not really a problem at all).

(35,392 posts)you know, the "Speaker of the House" ...
I did notice that gas jumped 30 cents in the two weeks following the "rout" by the Republicans in the mid-term elections, and hasn't seen the lower side of $3 since then ...

(1,664 posts)Last time gas was up this high, congress had a hissy, and the price came down. This time, no hissy. Time for a Nissan Leaf. I can't personally afford one so I got a Honda Shadow that gets beter then 50mpg, but it still runs on gas.

(18,219 posts)I think that the oil companies or speculators (I don't know where the prices are coming from anymore) are manipulating the gas prices way above where they should be to undermine Obama's re-election. I think this is half-crazy and half-possible.
But I do hear a lot of complains about the price of gas, and if it hits national average above $4, I am sure there will be more complaints. We have become conditioned to the prices between $3.50 and $3.99 already (how quickly we adjust), but I think that $4 is a psychological tripper.

(6,271 posts)You can so so easily look up gas prices for the last 10 years and see they were just as bad under George W Bush.
President Obama took office during one of those occasional dips in price. Just a peek at a graph makes it clear.
Then there's that rare Republican that can actually remember a little.

The mood of motorists? Meh.
Partisan finger-pointing aside, polls suggest that most people aren't as worked up over gas prices as they were four years ago, when a gallon of regular hit a national average of $4.11 a gallon. Nor has there been as much clamor for drastic measures, such as tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in Texas and Louisiana.
"I think we all have adjusted," said Lara Clayton of Los Alamitos as she spent nearly $60 recently to fill up her 2008 Lincoln Town Car at a Seal Beach 76 station. "We just don't drive as much and we are careful to combine errands."
That's one reason for the comparative complacency, and economists and industry observers say there are others.

(82 posts)I would spend about 7 dollars a day on gas, while most shifts just getting paid 12.50 (short shifts cause this). When people are poor they don't want to be paying a ton of money on stuff they need to have to work.

(100,040 posts)Oil speculators have been out of control and no one is punishing them. Since W's "election" (or lack thereof) - oil and gas prices have had ZERO to do with supply and demand. It's all speculation.

(82 posts)Everyone considers the President, whatever President it is, to be all-powerful. Therefore they get blamed for a lot that is outside their control. Right or wrong, this happens with every President.

(593 posts)They are not great in the short term, but it will be an incentive to make the switch to other sources (solar, wind, nuclear, etc). Peak oil is not going to be some sudden shock, but rather a slow increase in price as supplies dwindle. The slower the process the better the chance of our country surviving... I think the lack of outrage may be people accepting that peak oil and increased international demand are real. The wall street speculators are certainly pushing up gas prices, but this is just a preview. The supply/demand situation will catch up soon enough.

(22,308 posts)so it won't be such a big issue once it is time to vote.
It seems to have dropped a little in the last few days. I payed twenty cents less yesterday than I did just a few days earlier (I fill up trucks for the place I work so I buy gas a lot).
I don't think it will be much of an issue by the time people go to vote, it is just one more distraction the (R)s are using now so they don't need to talk about real issues.
