Audi tests driverless car on FL expressway;expects to begin selling self-driving cars within 5 yrs.

Isn't this a cause for celebration? Not only will us geezers and geezerettes (or soon-to-be) still be able to get around, but even whippersnappers can leave the driving to the car. Probably will result in fewer accidents.

Audi this week tested a self-driving car on a Tampa expressway that had been recently designated as an automated driving and connected car test bed.

Audi plans to begin offering the initial version of Piloted driving - called Traffic Jam Pilot - to the public within five years.

bringing the law into accord with reality.

Here in CT, there is already talk of the legislature explicitly considering legislation that operators of driverless cars must still obtain and possess a DL, insurance and that such cars must have operator controls. (Removal of operator controls was one idea Google considered to undermine these very types of laws.)

That nearly entirely undermines the benefits and purpose of this concept...few people are going to pay that kind of money for a car (I believe the latest report I read for the Google program was that the price-floor, the price that it would likely never drop below, was $100K.) that drives itself except those of us who the law will never allow to operate a vehicle on the public roadways.

I was pelted by a blast of gravel coming from the car in front of me that ran off the edge of the road while the driver was busy putting on makeup using the rear view mirror.

Then I had a near miss while I waited in the left turn lane while some idiot making a left turn from the crossing traffic almost took out my driver side headlight when his steering wheel slipped out of his right hand while he was gabbing on his phone with his left hand.
