A lot of what we know is not necessarily first hand.

A common charge by defenders of 50 Shades of Grey is that those who claim there's a rape scene in the book have not actually read the book.

Well, that argument is essentially the same as the creationist "Were you there?" trope. The fact is, a lot of what people know about society is not necessarily based on first hand experience!
