Remember the irrepressible Yakov Smirnoff?

He was the Russian comic who made a name for himself back in the days of Perestroika when
the Soviet empire was emanating the loud cracks preceding its crumble. His comedic schtick touched on deprecations of politics and daily life in communist Russia. Perhaps his most memorable line was: "In Soviet Union, television watches you." It seems his career declined somewhat after the fall of the USSR (Putin - "I'm not dead YET!&quot , but he is still doing standup to this day.

Where is our Yakov Smirnoff of this year 2014 in the crumbling American empire, where telephone, Internet and librarian watches you? Carlin, alas, is gone.

What a country!

Yakov was at a small restaurant comedy club this weekend in Santa Barbara. He is still around.
