$175k up front...all you have to do is create 24 full time jobs in 5 years. You get the money back if you accomplish that.

"The Washington Street property was acquired by the town in 2003 after the former Apollo Tannery shut down and the property owners did not pay their taxes. The decades of the tannery operating at the site, however, left environmental problems. The town and state environmental agencies worked together and cleaned the property. In 2005, residents voted for a bond issue for the town to borrow $836,000 for the clean-up work. The town later received a $200,000 grant used to clean up brownfield sites."

(12,448 posts)More people live here in tiny Las Vegas than the entire state of Maine.
More people live in the Bronx than live in Maine. And on a related note, more people rely on food subsidies in NYC than live in Maine.
More people live in Belem, Brazil than than Maine.
More people die of tuberculosis every year than live in Maine.
More people in England live completely off any power grid than live in Maine.
More people in the U.S. suffer from irritable bowel syndrome than live in Maine.
More Americans live on less than $2 a day than live in Maine.
OK, my apologies to the DU Mainers, both of you. Just having a bit of fun.
But seriously, when the temperatures rise to the point where arctic survival gear is not required to go outside, it is absolutely gorgeous.

(9,902 posts)right on the water. I'm in Rockland, two towns over. Our winters are pretty mild due to being right on the water...and this winter we didn't even have to plow our driveway. Hubby used the snow blower maybe 3 times. I never pulled out the heavy duty winter coat. Sweat shirts and vests.

you should try northern Maine....stay in the woods though...the towns in northern Maine are where most of the republicans in the state reside

(12,018 posts)a filmmaker from California who wanted to build a sound stage on the property. But rumors got flying that he was going to make porn films and the locals got all up and arms, and that went downhill fast.
My reaction, at the time, was: "what's so bad about porn films?" There would have been jobs, at least.
it's Camden....they don't have sex there.

(17,086 posts)I spent a winter working there about a quarter century ago. IIRC, Camden had the highest percentage of millionaires of any town in the state. And yes, the climate along the coast is far milder than 20 miles inland, thanks to the Gulf Stream effect, I guess.
