"SNIP.........................
WASHINGTON (AP) Even as they grapple with an immigration crisis at the border, White House officials are making plans to act before November's mid-term elections to grant work permits to potentially millions of immigrants who are in this country illegally, allowing them to stay in the United States without threat of deportation, according to advocates and lawmakers in touch with the administration.
Such a large-scale move on immigration could scramble election-year politics and lead some conservative Republicans to push for impeachment proceedings against President Barack Obama, a prospect White House officials have openly discussed.
Yet there's little sign that the urgent humanitarian situation in South Texas, where unaccompanied minors have been showing up by the tens of thousands from Central America, has impeded Obama from making plans to address some portion of the 11.5 million immigrants now in this country illegally. Obama announced late last month that congressional efforts to remake the nation's dysfunctional immigration system were dead and he would proceed on his own authority to fix the system where he could.
Since then he's asked Congress for $3.7 billion to deal with the crisis of unaccompanied youths, a request that's gone unmet even as the House and the Senate scramble to see if they can vote on some solution to the crisis this week before adjourning for their annual August recess.

(9,893 posts)and I have to assume that the President and his advisers have polling data that clearly show that this will bring out more Dem votes than Repug votes in November.
I have been monitoring the comment sections to immigration stories in the New York Times and the Washington Post recently. There have been many, many comments to the effect of, "I voted for Obama, but the current immigration situation is just too much and I can't support it."
It makes me nervous.

There are more democrats than republicans. It is just that the poor don't vote. If they do, Democrats will do well. Yes it is risky. But I don't think Obama does anything without thinking it through.

(9,893 posts)but it may be a problem with the races in more conservative states of North Carolina (Hagan) and Arkansas (Pryor), where immigration may not be so popular.
In the House, so many of the districts are gerrymandered to perfection and won't flip from R to D until redistricting happens after the 2020 census, that is if the D's can gain control of more state houses.
I wish I had a ready list of swing House districts where immigration is popular and we have a chance of retiring an R.

(118,588 posts)are right. But with all these bold moves...perchance Dems will retain the Senate and get some governorships.

(9,893 posts)flip this year we will not have to flip in 2016.
I'd love to get some governorships, particularly Michigan's. I grew up there, went to college there, and visit frequently. Snyder needs to go and take the putrid R's, and almost all of them are truly putrid, from the legislature with him.

(1,284 posts)Big Ed's special interests must've been in his ear about it.
The same ones that had him supporting Keystone for awhile.
He makes it so tough to watch his show sometimes.
