CNNs S.E. Cupp has never been shy about her atheism, even if it does make her stand out in the conservative media world. But in a new online video for Crossfire the pundit makes the claim that conservative atheists are actually better than liberal ones, and she uses Bill Maher as her prime example.
I dont believe in God, but Im not mad at him, Cupp says at the top of the video, immediately contradicting herself. She explains that she became an atheist because shes not a joiner and didnt want to be part of a club or group. She says she believes that atheists are perpetuating the idea that they are somehow disenfranchised or left out of the political process, but that has not been her experience as a conservative.
Cupp says she does not believe the myth that conservatism is hostile to atheism. Im a conservative atheist and Ive felt very welcome by this party, she says of Republicans. In fact, Id go so far as to say conservatism is far more intellectually honest and respectful of atheism than liberalism has been. While conservatives tolerate and respect both atheists and religious people, Cupp says liberals embrace a militant hostility towards religion. Which brings her to Bill Maher.
Bill Maher thinks 95% of the world has a neurological disorder, she says. I dont think youd find that on the right. For that reason Ill say it I think our atheists are better than yours. Its only a matter of time before Maher responds to those fighting words. http://www.mediaite.com/tv/s-e-cupp-im-a-better-atheist-than-bill-maher/

(12,151 posts)Sounds like she's trying to be the conservative "token" atheist in the mold of conservative anti-feminist women or anti-minority minorities.

(21,115 posts)and how does one be a "better atheist" than someone else. "I don't believe in God better than you!" What an idiot!

(12,723 posts)militant atheists suck. I am an atheist like her. I don't give a fuck if others have those beliefs. Militant anti-theists hurt the cause.

(101,295 posts)Well, we can go back to GHW Bush saying he didn't think atheists should be counted as American citizens. Or we can just look at a poll, and see that Republicans do indeed have something against atheists (and Muslims), while Democrats are more accepting. Liberals do not 'embrace a militant hostility towards religion'. That's an idiotic strawman.

So, why do you think 'militant atheists suck', while you think you're like her - an atheist who lies for her living? Why would you possibly identify with her?

With that said, it is time to bring back the unrec feature.

(10,893 posts)but as many differences as I have with her, one thing I will say is that at least S.E. Cupp isn't as in-your-face about her Atheism as Maher is. Like someone said earlier, Maher has been pretty militant about his beliefs--so much that he talks about all of religion as non-sense and basically something that is incapable of doing any good whatsoever. I know he is a comedian, but it comes across more as self-righteousness rather than comedy. Why not believe what you believe, and respect the spirituality of others?

(4,840 posts)the republican's last vice-presidential nominee, Paul Ryan, a fan of Ayn Rand, denied her based specifically on her Atheism? Obviously, he felt he wouldn't be elected if he didn't distance himself from her Atheism.
