Natural News: A Truly Deadly Brand of Pseudoscience

If there was an award for the single greatest hub of pseudoscience on the internet, the website Natural News would well and truly take the crown tin foil hat. Expect to find anti-vaccine paranoia which extends not only to your garden variety antivaxxer favorites such as the debunked link to autism but to crackpot claims that vaccines caused the "cancer epidemic" and were even responsible for the "origin" of AIDS. According to Natural News, Microsoft is developing "eugenics vaccines that target specific races and nationalities with infertility-inducing pharmaceuticals". Alongside this you'll also find full blown AIDS denialism (emphasis mine):

"HIV does NOT cause AIDS. HIV does not cause anything. A staggering statement given the hype and acceptance by the scientific establishment and, through them, the public that the HIV virus is the only cause of AIDS. HIV is a weak virus and does not dismantle the immune system. Nor is AIDS passed on sexually."

It is worth noting that the above blog post is authored by David Icke, the man who believes that the world is controlled by a race of reptiles from outer space who reside in underground tunnels. If you thought things couldn't get much darker than AIDS denialism, you'd be wrong. This week Natural News reached dangerous new levels of hysteria, publishing a post indirectly calling for the deaths of journalists, publishers and scientists who have worked on the topic of genetically modified organisms. In this latest post Mike Adams, the creator of Natural News, calls for the creation of a list of pro-GMO "publishers, journalists and scientists":

"Just as history needed to record the names and deeds of Nazi war criminals, so too must all those collaborators who are promoting the death and destruction caused by GMOs be named for the historical record. The true extent of their collaboration with an anti-human regime will all become readily apparent once the GMO delusion collapses and mass global starvation becomes an inescapable reality."

for unintentional comedy, though, it's hard to beat Adams' expose of the fibers in Chicken McNuggets.

I mean, obviously. There's no other reason you'd defend vaccines unless you think big pharma is good and beyond all reproach!

Also, their vile political comments about healthcare

From January 3rd, 2011: an article headed 'Health Ranger's predictions for 2011 - 2012; an era of self reliance and human awakening' (I won't link to it, but it's easily found):

...• On the issue of freedom and liberty, I predict a surge of interest in Libertarian political philosophy from both former Democrats and former Republicans who realize that the path to prosperity and freedom is found in individual liberty and personal responsibility. I see the Tea Party suffering from disillusionment as its own elected members betray its supporters with more taxes and Big Government spending. Expect to see Ron Paul and Rand Paul do extraordinarily well in the coming years (as long as they stay on principle), and watch for a groundswell of popular support for the once-again-new idea of sensibly limited government.

• Watch for a rise in the Tenth Amendment movement in America as an increasing number of Americans fight back against what they see as a dangerous expansion of the power of the federal government. With the TSA in your pants and the FDA in your greenhouse, there's no telling what part of your life Big Brother wants to control next. America was founded on the idea of limited government, and I believe we'll see a powerful, passionate movement that seeks to bring the federal government back down to its Constitutionally-mandated size (which is a fraction of its current size and scope). The Tenth Amendment, by the way, specifically reserves all rights not specifically granted to the federal government to be held by the States or the People. The Constitution, for the record, never granted the federal government the right to run a health care system, nor to give away the power to coin money to a private banking cartel, nor to inspect your backyard food production operation that you use to produce jams and jellies for the local farmers' market.

Note in particular the statements: 'The Constitution.. never granted the federal government the right to run a healthcare system.'

And more generally:
'
And 'the path to prosperity and freedom is found in individual liberty and personal responsibility. I see the Tea Party suffering from disillusionment as its own elected members betray its supporters with more taxes and Big Government spending. Expect to see Ron Paul and Rand Paul do extraordinarily well in the coming years (as long as they stay on principle)'

As I have said before: Such ideologies murder far more people than any terrorist organization could dream of killing.

David Icke is really good at making something sound accurate and I'd like to string him up by the fingernails. He is an irresponsible asshole who deserves to be in jail.

Becoming infected with HIV does not mean there will be specific symptoms and a person can be asymptomatic for many years. It is impossible to measure the progression of infection without blood tests. HIV burrows into a person's CD4 cells (killer white blood cells that fight infection) and uses the DNA inside to replicate. It's a parasite. When it has replicated so much that the CD4 cell is 'full', the cell expodes (dies) and the virus flows into the bloodstream, then finds other CD4 cells to target, and so on and so on, severely depleting the body's ability to fight infection.

When there are not enough CD4 cells in the body to protect it, people can become infected with a whole constellation of diseases (caused by other organisms); this is what we call AIDS.

Unfortunately, there is still no cure for HIV infection. After more than 30 years of studying the virus, the best we can do for an HIV positive person is provide support, promote healthy living practices, and offer drugs that block HIV from entering CD4 cells.

Oh - and warn them about charlatans like David Icke.

Sorry for the tangent.

You should show no interest in reptiles, except to study what kind of things reptiles would enjoy eating.
