Signs and symptoms typically begin abruptly within five to 10 days of infection with Ebola virus. Early signs and symptoms include:
Fever
Severe headache
Joint and muscle aches
Chills
Weakness
http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/ebola-virus/basics/symptoms/con-20031241
I have very slight 'Joint and muscle aches.' Probably has nothing to do with the 30 mile bike ride I took yesterday morning.
Clearly, I have Ebola.

(18,490 posts)4. Defense against fear and anxiety
By laughing at things which frighten us we bring the under control and render them less menacing. Typical is Woody Allens comment, Its not that Im afraid to die, I just dont want to be there when it happens (Dorinson 1986). Gallows humor, black humor and jokes about disasters (such as those circulating shortly after the space shuttle blue up on a television mission) operate as a king of defense mechanism. Self-disparagement, a form of humor that is the specialty of certain comedians such as Woody Allen, may be adaptive in the same way (for the joke teller as well as the audience).

I have found it saddening to see how many people here on DU have reacted with near paranoia and insisting they should not be allowed to come back here for treatment.

(8,311 posts).... such an eventuality is beyond me, instead of building two near major cities, but it doesn't change the facts as they stand now.
Actually, I know why... no one took Ebola very seriously because every outbreak seemed to be self-contained before.

(62,444 posts)Yes, I think people hiding under their beds because two patients are being brought in under appropriate controls for treatment is not only worthy of ridicule, but should be.
pipi_k
(21,020 posts)and I'll tell you why.
I suffer from what I know are irrational fears as a result of anxiety disorders.
I've been a member of a few online sites for people with anxiety disorders, and know lots of people who have them.
We often amuse ourselves by joking about all the diseases we have "had", or currently "have".
But we can do that.
People who don't have the same fears...well...IMO, they don't get the same privilege. It's like laughing at someone for their disabilities.
So I started out laughing at this thread because I identified with the paranoia, until it occurred to me that some of the replies here might not be so much about identifying with the hypochondria, but about laughing at people who have to suffer with it each and every day of their lives.
Not cool

(23,720 posts)I don't mean that in any unkind way. However, the OP has nothing to do with you personally.
If it were posted in one of your online sites for people with anxiety disorders, you would be justified in your offense.

(61,692 posts)Nevermind that the precautions being taken at Emory are better than nearly any hospital in the US, or that the Dr and nurse with it have the best chance of recovering from it here.
Oh yeah, the best reason no one here has ebola is that they have only just now arrived with the first patient.
But Donald wants them to go away.
