Working on a project, and I invite your participation

You know how the right-wing media goes nuts when Obama does something, only to have it turn out that virtually every other President has done the same thing? I'm collecting examples of that, just to store away for Thanksgiving Dinner with my batshit crazy relatives.

For Example:

Obama is photographed with his feet up on the Resolute Desk in the White House. The right wing says he's desecrating the Oval Office, until photo's start popping up of just about every President back to FDR (who didn't do it for obvious reasons) with their feet on the desk.

http://www.mediaite.com/online/obama-put-his-feet-on-oval-office-desk-and-people-are-outraged/
http://mediamatters.org/blog/2010/01/25/dear-fox-nation-was-bush-disrespecting-the-oval/159478
(For some reason, the "Link" feature isn't working)

I know there are others. I remember something about visiting Normandy and another one about the National Day of Prayer. I tried Googling "Stuff that wasn't a problem until Obama did it" but that wasn't very helpful. And there's a breathtaking number of Snopes.com articles, but not specifically on this subject.

So if you have the time and inclination, I'd appreciate your chiming in. I'll kick this occasionally with new entries as I uncover them. Please try to include a link (or two) for documentation.

In the meantime, the two examples that come to mind are the use of executive orders and, possibly, the power of the pardon. Specifically, though, I can't remember examples. Oh, has Obama ever been dinged for taking a vacation? Because I'm pretty sure that Bush II was the vacation champion. And every president has made good use of vacation time, enjoying very fine accommodations.

Given that every syllable of a President's speech is parsed for possible meaning and nuance, it's massively important that he deliver every word just as written.

Is Obama the first President to play golf? Since World War II, Jimmy Carter was the only non-golfing President. Even Franklin Roosevelt, before polio, was a golfer.

Bush played 24 times in his first two years, then basically quit the game (remember this video?)

He decided it looked bad to be golfing while troops were in the field.

Sat Aug 2, 2014, 07:51 PM
Aug 2014

Early in Obama's first term, he attended a Black History Month celebration at a New Jersey elementary school. It was obviously a big deal to have the first black president at their celebration, and so the school came up with new lyrics to old songs, including the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" that simply included the refrain, "Hooray, Mr. President." It was an innocuous photo op that presidents have been doing for generations. But the right wing went nuts with comparisons to the Hitler Youth and screaming brainwashing and indoctrination. There was even a Tea Party protest outside the school.

I saw a video back then of a woman actually crying over the danger to the children of allowing them to be "indoctrinated" by him. She breaks down right at 23s into this news account of the over-the-top RW reaction to the president's speech:

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/0l2Kw8Wl8qs?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

But in 1991 Bush 41 gave a similar talk to schoolchildren at the start of the school year, urging them, as Obama did, to study hard and stay in school. (Other presidents might have also addressed school kids about staying in school and studying hard.)

The unisex cap that the Marines were considering is called the Dan Daley cap and is based on the one worn in World War I Marine Dan Daley. He's the two-time Medal of Honor recipient who famously shouted to his men, "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?" during the Battle of Belleau Wood in World War I.

Ok, in real life it doesn't actually have anything to do with Obama, but the Outrage Machine sucks in whatever passes in front of it.

It was interesting to see who became all aghast at the "French" touch, because they'd obviously hadn't known that black berets had been the standard US Army headgear for the previous decade (2001-2011), and berets had been worn by elite units for decades earlier (Rangers, Green Berets).

It was a fascinating detail, and the people who made a big deal about the frenchiness of the berets were pretty much the same bunch who turn into amnesiacs about what they were saying before Obama was elected.

...I had said many of the same things about the "Drug Czar"-dom of William Bennett. In 1989.

The reaction I got back then was along the lines of "lighten up kid, it's just a shorthand, been used off and on for decades. It's not even the official title, it's just shorter than "Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy" or whatever bureaucratese applies to a particular job." Ok, it was fair point, back then.

But in 2009? It's not as if it had been only used obscurely, it was headline stuff:

Drug Czar Bennett May Quit, Officials Say : Administration: His resignation would be the second Cabinet-level departure in two weeks. He is expected to claim gains in narcotics control.
November 07, 1990
|DAVID LAUTER and RONALD J. OSTROW | TIMES STAFF WRITERS

WASHINGTON — Bush Administration drug czar William J. Bennett plans to resign within the next few days, Administration officials said Tuesday. This would be the second Cabinet-level departure from the Administration in the past two weeks.

Bennett, who served as secretary of education during the Ronald Reagan Administration and then took on the drug job for Bush, is expected to claim as he departs that the Administration has made substantial progress in its highly touted war on drugs.

Poppy bush had other czars. So did Bill Clinton. As did that guy the teabaggers would like everyone to forget they fully supported.

So the only way you could have been shocked, SHOCKED!, that Obama had "czars" was if you hadn't been paying attention to public affairs for twenty years. Particularly anyone who was older than, say, 35-40 in 2009, who were old enough to be paying attention to the news back during the Bush41 administration.

But along about 2009 (what was it that happened that year -- oh yeah) Republicans decided that it was a tax and that only someone like Stalin or Hitler would have EVER supported it. In 2012, opposition to cap and trade was a plank in the GOP Platform.

in a geeky sort of way. Presidents used to NEVER return a salute. Even Eisenhower, who you would think would have saluted by sheer reflex after a lifetime in the military, did not return salutes as President. The thinking was that when not in uniform, you're not supposed to salute.

Reagan, however, consulted with military advisors who told him, basically, You're the Commander in Chief and you can salute whoever you want. So he did, and the custom has remained.

Not without some controversy.

42. Republicans Had No Problem With Reagan and Nixon Trading For Hostages ...
Sun Aug 3, 2014, 07:55 PM
Aug 2014

Ronald Reagan Gave Iran 1,500 Missiles for Hostages. Obama Trades Five Guys? GOP Heads Explode.

by David Harris Gershon

I don't want to hear another word about GOP lawmakers chest-thumping and foaming-at-the-mouth about the fact that Obama traded, without the requisite 30-day notice to Congress, five indefinitely detained prisoners for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

You know why? Because history:

In 1985, while Iran and Iraq were at war, Iran made a secret request to buy weapons from the United States. McFarlane sought President Reagan's approval, in spite of the embargo against selling arms to Iran. McFarlane explained that the sale of arms would not only improve U.S. relations with Iran, but might in turn lead to improved relations with Lebanon, increasing U.S. influence in the troubled Middle East. Reagan was driven by a different obsession. He had become frustrated at his inability to secure the release of the seven American hostages being held by Iranian terrorists in Lebanon. As president, Reagan felt that "he had the duty to bring those Americans home."
...

The arms-for-hostages proposal divided the administration. Longtime policy adversaries Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger and Secretary of State George Shultz opposed the deal, but Reagan, McFarlane and CIA director William Casey supported it. With the backing of the president, the plan progressed. By the time the sales were discovered, more than 1,500 missiles had been shipped to Iran. Three hostages had been released, only to be replaced with three more, in what Secretary of State George Shultz called "a hostage bazaar."

So GOP lawmakers are apoplectic about Obama not giving Congress the 30-day notice required by law before transferring any detainee from Guantanamo Bay, men who have mostly been detained without charge?

But will raise President Reagan upon a pillar, a man who (gave) sold Iran over 1,500 missiles for the release of U.S. hostages?

I have one response: shut up and sit down. Class is in session.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/05/31/1303494/-GOP-Hero-Reagan-Gave-Iran-1-500-Missiles-for-Hostages-Obama-Trades-Five-Guys-GOP-Heads-Explode#

Paris Accords

. . . provided for the POW exchange of 'Communist' enemy combatants that led to his release, along with hundreds of others.

At the end of combat operations, deals are normally made to exchange prisoners, often as part of confidence-building reconciliation. As you know, last week the President announced that combat operations would be ending in Afghanistan this year. The WH and Pentagon clearly stated this release and exchange was part of those broader reconciliation efforts. Same as with McCain and his fellow POWs.
____________________________________

The Paris Peace Accords of 1973 included provisions for exchanging prisoners of war. The plan to bring American prisoners home was called OPERATION HOMECOMING. Prisoners were to be returned to U.S. control during February and March 1973, with the longest-held generally returning first.

OPERATION HOMECOMING returned 591 POWs: 325 Air Force personnel, 77 Army, 138 Navy, 26 Marines and 25 civilians. Those who were not freed at Hanoi--POWs held in South Vietnam by the Viet Cong, mostly Army and civilians--left from Loc Ninh, the scene of the North Vietnam-South Vietnam prisoner exchange.

44. Fox's Selective Amnesia: Megyn Kelly Forgets President Bush's Negotiations With Enemies In Iraq
Sun Aug 3, 2014, 08:04 PM
Aug 2014

June 3, 2014
by Olivia Marshall

Fox News host Megyn Kelly endorsed the canard that President George W. Bush never negotiated with terrorists, an attempt to criticize Obama for negotiations that led to the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl from Taliban captivity. The reality is that Obama's negotiation is fully consistent with recent American history, including negotiations conducted by President Bush during the Iraq War.

On the June 2 edition of Fox News' The Kelly File, host Kelly asked former Vice President Dick Cheney whether the U.S. negotiated with terrorists in order to secure the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl from the Taliban in an exchange for five Guantanamo Bay prisoners. Kelly used a 2008 speech from former President Bush in Israel where she claimed he "shared this powerful history lesson on the danger of trying to deal with the devil":

KELLY: America doesn't normally negotiate with terrorists. Did we just do that? Back in 2008 President Bush was speaking in Israel when he shared his powerful history lesson on the danger in trying to deal with the devil.

Kelly, following the lead of many in the media, ignored the fact that Bergdahl's release mirrors similar negotiations throughout U.S. history. In fact, Time magazine pointed out that President Bush, whom Kelly touted as having warned against negotiating with terrorists, "cut deals with Sunni insurgents in Iraq's Anbar province -- working with and even paying people who had been killing American soldiers" during the Iraq War. On June 1, PolitiFact wrote that Mitchell Reiss, who worked under Bush and presidential candidate Mitt Romney, explained that "There's little that's actually new here," "noting Bush engaged in negotiations with Iran and North Korea even after decreeing them part of the 'Axis of Evil.'"

47. 10 ideas Republicans loved until Barack Obama became President
Sun Aug 3, 2014, 09:53 PM
Aug 2014

1. The Obamacare individual mandate. Before they became obsessed with bringing down Obamacare, Republicans had the idea of a free-rider fee for people who can afford health insurance but refuse to buy it, also known as the individual mandate. The free-rider fee is part of “Romneycare” in Massachusetts.

2. End-of-life counseling. Republicans also used to include counseling for end-of-life issues in their own healthcare proposals. But when President Obama liked the idea? Well, he just wants to kill your grandparents. Oh, and by the way, the so-called “death panels” are nothing of the kind. It’s simply about giving patients and their families the information they need to make the best decisions about the end-of-life care they want.

3. Donor disclosure. Before they opposed the DISCLOSE Act, Republican Congressional leaders were all for transparency in campaign contributions. How can we forget House GOP leader John Boehner proclaiming that “sunlight is the best disinfectant”?

4. Clean energy. There was once a day when Congressional Republicans made clean energy a priority. They supported national energy laboratories, hybrid-vehicle manufacturers and the development of electric car batteries. Now, of course, they want nothing to do with clean energy. After all, there are plenty of climate-change deniers to claim there’s no reason to make the investment.

5. Medicare cost savings. Before they accused Obamacare of “cutting” $700 billion from Medicare, Republicans in Congress proposed the same $700 billion in savings from reducing waste and inefficiencies in Medicare. But unlike the cuts made by Obamacare, which come from eliminating excess payments to providers (not patients), the GOP wanted to use the money for more tax cuts for the wealthy. Not to mention that Republicans have been trying to make cuts to Medicare for years, and still are. Vouchers, anyone?

6. Deficit-reduction commission. This one’s downright blatant. Republicans in Congress voted against their own bill to create a deficit-reduction commission because, according to a former GOP senator, they wanted to “stick it to the president.”

7. Welfare flexibility. After wanting more flexibility to eliminate red tape and move people out of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and into jobs, Mitt Romney, GOP governors and Congressional Republicans fought the idea when the Obama Administration proposed it.

8. Nuclear START treaty. Before they tried to block the nuclear START treaty negotiated by the Obama Administration, Republican leaders supported it under Presidents Reagan and Bush.

9. Gun violence prevention. Republicans in Congress helped President Reagan pass the Brady Bill establishing a national gun purchase background check system and pass a ban on military-style assault weapons. Now Republicans in Congress
oppose restoring the ban, and voted against closing the background check loophole that lets criminals buy guns easily at gun shows and over the Internet.

10. Upholding the Constitution. Many Republicans — especially Conservatives — say they live by the Constitution. But they can’t seem to make up their minds about the Constitution’s eligibility requirements to serve as President. Conservatives have, and still do, argue that if President Obama were born in a foreign country (which he wasn’t) to his American mother, he’d be ineligible to be President. But they don’t seem to have a problem with Tea Party darling Senator Ted Cruz running for President — even though he actually was born in a foreign country to an American mother.

48. And here are 24 things
Sun Aug 3, 2014, 09:57 PM
Aug 2014

Here’s what Republicans supported back in the day.
1. Health Care Mandates) Prior to the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by Democrats, Republicans widely supported the idea of an individual health care insurance mandate, Newt Gingrich being perhaps the chief supporter. Republicans have always preached about how people need to take responsibility for themselves, and now that a law exists that makes people take responsibility, the GOP is rejecting it simply on the grounds that President Barack Obama and the Democrats passed it.

2. The Nuclear START Treaty) Republicans shamelessly filibustered the ratification of the Obama START Treaty for quite a long period of time and criticized it tremendously and continue to try and find ways to circumvent the treaty today. What Republicans conveniently forget is that Ronald Reagan, the man that Republicans worship like a God, negotiated the very first START Treaty which was signed by yet another Republican, George H. W. Bush in 1991. That treaty expired in 2009 so President Obama negotiated a new one to continue the Reagan legacy. But since President Obama negotiated this treaty, the GOP retreated from Reagan’s policy faster than the decade it took to create the START Treaty in the first place.

3. Dream Act) Immigration reform has been touted by the GOP for decades now. Reagan granted amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants in the 1980′s. Most recently, Republicans worked on immigration reform under the Bush Administration and failed. President Bush and Senator John McCain both supported immigration reform and were willing to cross the aisle to work with Democrats, most notably Edward Kennedy. All of that work and bipartisanship ceased after the 2008 Election. Staunchly opposed to President Obama and anything his administration supports, Republicans turned their backs on immigration reform in favor of militarizing the border and laws that violate the civil rights of Hispanics. Obama’s Dream Act would do much that Reagan would approve of, but Republicans refuse hear anything of it.

4. TARP) Republicans supported TARP when they helped pass it in response to the economic collapse in 2008. President Bush even signed the legislation into law. But since it’s been up to the guiding hands of President Obama to deal with TARP, Republicans have since revoked their support and have been highly critical even as they take credit for it when presenting stimulus checks to their local constituents. The fact is, TARP is successful because President Obama oversaw it and Republicans hate that fact.

5. Bail Out of Auto Industry) Republicans once supported this too but abandoned it once President Obama called for it. The auto industry is a vital manufacturing sector that supports millions of American jobs and Republicans WANTED the industry to fail simply because President Obama wanted us to bail them out. If it had failed, Republicans would have blamed President Obama for not supporting the American auto industry. The bail out has been a resounding success with most of the money plus interest paid back to the taxpayers. Mitt Romney has since tried to take credit for the idea because it has been so successful.

6. Israel Going Back To Pre-1967 Borders) Many Presidents have suggested this, even George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. But once President Obama repeated it, Republicans immediately denounced the President and threw their support to Israel’s President. This action by Republicans is totally unprecedented. It is reprehensible for American politicians to support a foreign leader more than the American President. Imagine if the Republican Party had overtly supported Hitler over FDR during World War Two. The only reason Republicans are rejecting President Obama’s plan is because they cannot bring themselves to endorse any idea he suggests, even if it is a Republican one.

7. Gun Control) Republicans overwhelmingly reject any and all gun control measures today. Which is very strange considering Ronald Reagan himself supported the Brady Handgun Act. But, it’s still true. Republicans did indeed support gun control measures in the past. It’s different now. Today’s intolerant, prejudiced, and extremist Republican Party is only against gun control now because they believe there needs to be a war against liberals and minority groups. It’s all about fear and war.

8. Public Education) Even the Founding Fathers believed in education for all. Every Republican President in United States history has been supportive of the public education system in this country. Ronald Reagan campaigned on axing the Department of Education but not only did he NOT eliminate it, he amped up its budget. It is only now that President Obama seeks to improve the education system that Republicans are against public education. When President Bush sought to improve public education, Republicans were on board but now that Obama is President, Republicans have decided that all public schools are evil liberal institutions that must be destroyed.

9. Infrastructure Spending) Republicans have always believed in strong infrastructure, until now. Republicans used the power of the federal government to build the railroads in the 1860′s and 1870′s, the Panama Canal in the beginning of the 20th century, and the interstate highway system in the 1950′s. Yet when President Obama called for new infrastructure spending to improve America’s crumbling roads and bridges and to improve our rail lines, Republicans immediately reversed their long-held belief in a strong American infrastructure. Why? Because they hate President Obama and oppose everything he believes in, even if it was once a part of the Republican platform.

10. Child Labor Laws) This one is surprising. Republicans were the ones that championed child labor laws in the first place. Starting in 1852, in the once Republican state of Massachusetts, child labor laws have been fought for by both parties. The only opponent of child labor laws has traditionally been big business. Republicans tried to pass a Constitutional amendment in 1924 and it didn’t succeed. It wasn’t until Democrats passed the Fair Labor Standards Act that child labor laws became federal law. Republicans oppose child labor laws now because of their deep ties with corporations. The goal of the corporate world is to find cheap labor and because President Obama is against huge corporations, Republicans must stand with the corporations, even if that means killing child labor laws.

11. Civil Rights) Republicans were once the champions of civil rights as well. They ended slavery and adopted the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. They splintered over the Civil Rights Act in 1964, although it was a Republican led Supreme Court that ruled in the Brown v Board of Education case, and have become more and more opposed to civil rights ever since. President Obama has called for increased civil rights and because of that, Republicans now oppose civil rights for everyone except Christian white males.

12. Environmental Protection) Originally championed by Theodore Roosevelt, Republicans used to support efforts to protect the environment. Over the last century, however, that support has reversed. Republicans even once supported the environment in the 1970′s when Nixon created the EPA, but no longer. Republicans are now in complete support of the irresponsibility of the oil and coal industry and want to open the entire American coastline and even federally protected lands to drilling and mining.
Republicans even used to support cap-and-trade. The first George Bush signed legislation in 1990 that implemented the cap-and-trade system and many Republicans still do support cap-and-trade. But because President Obama supports it, most Republicans are now against it.

13. Deficit Spending) This one is big. The GOP has employed deficit spending since the Reagan years and abused it during the Bush administration to pass the conservative agenda and to fund wars. Reagan doubled the national debt and George W. Bush proceeded to double it again. But because Democrats controlled the White House and the Congress from 2008 to 2010, Republicans completely reversed their stance on deficit spending and still oppose deficit spending solely on the grounds that a Republican isn’t President. If a Republican were President right now, you can bet the farm that they would abuse deficit spending once again to slam the destructive anti-middle class, anti-poor, anti-women, and anti-America agenda through Congress with no thought about fiscal responsibility whatsoever.

14. Federal Reserve) The Federal Reserve is now a target for most Republicans, which is puzzling because it started out as the GOP’s idea. Proposed by Republican leader Nelson Aldrich to organize and regulate the banking system and to enforce monetary policy, and thus stabilize our financial system, the Federal Reserve Act was signed into law by Democratic President Woodrow Wilson in 1913. Republicans now want to dismantle or weaken the Federal Reserve because President Obama needs it to enforce Dodd-Frank which will force banks to be more responsible and accountable, and will protect consumers.

15. Women’s Rights) The women’s rights movement was born in and grew with the Republican Party in the mid 1800′s. Many Republicans supported voting rights for women although to pass the 19th Amendment it took women threatening to cause Republican losses in the 1920 Election to persuade them to help pass it in Congress. As women gained more equality, they also demanded equal pay for equal work and reproductive rights. Ronald Reagan made abortion legal as Governor of California in the 1960′s and a moderate conservative Supreme Court handed down the Roe v Wade decision in 1973. Today’s Republican Party is now waging a war against women and the harder Democrats and President Obama fight for women’s rights, the harder Republicans will fight to eliminate them because of orders from white Christian extremists.

16. End Of Life Counseling) Republicans referred to this as “death panels” in 2009 in response to President Obama’s Affordable Care Act. But Republicans wholeheartedly supported end of life counseling in their own 2003 Medicare bill. Both of the Bush Presidents supported end of life counseling and even Sarah Palin herself supported it before she suddenly turned against it. In fact, the GOP had supported end of life counseling for decades. So what happened? Easy. President Obama supports it, so Republicans are now against it. It’s really that simple. And petty.

17. Financial Disclosure) Republicans were all for this in 2002 when they passed and President Bush signed McCain-Feingold into law. Campaign financing laws have always been supported by Republicans and Democrats alike, until now. Because of their hatred of President Obama, who supports campaign finance laws, and their desperation for absolute power and authority, Republicans are now completely against financial disclosure. They have allied themselves with the corporate world over the American people in their effort to steer elections their direction and do that, campaign finance laws must not exist. That is why the activist conservative Supreme Court struck down the laws to begin with.

18. Minimum Wage) The way Republicans have been talking about abolishing the minimum wage, you would think they’ve always been against it, right? Wrong. 82 House Republicans and 39 Senate Republicans joined the Democratic majority in passing the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007. President Bush signed the bill into law. It is only now that President Obama stands with the American workers that Republicans oppose the minimum wage on behalf of their corporate masters, most notably, the Koch brothers. If Republicans were so against the minimum wage, they would not have voted to raise it. Three times.

19. Military Intervention In The Middle East) This should really convince you that the GOP is simply opposing policies because a black President supports them. Reagan, Bush 41, and Bush 43 all supported military intervention in the Middle East, yet when President Obama uses the military to intervene in Libya, Republicans all of a sudden become doves? They’ve really revealed themselves with this policy reversal. The fact that under President Barack Obama, Libya successfully overthrew their dictator without one American life being lost must infuriate the GOP.

20. Abortion) It may sound really far-fetched but there are many pro-choice conservatives out there and some politicians are part of that group. Take Ronald Reagan for instance. He made abortion legal in California as Governor of the state. And most recently, it was discovered that extreme right-winger Rick Santorum’s wife had an abortion to save her own life. In my opinion, that means Santorum is for the procedure when his wife’s life is on the line, but every other woman needs to die rather than exercise their right to an abortion which was ruled to exist in Roe v Wade by a conservative leaning court in 1973.

21. The Economic Development Administration) Never heard of this you say? This program provides grants to local projects which have created jobs. Republicans such as Susan Collins, Chuck Grassely, and even John Cornyn have supported this program in the past. Cornyn stated in March 2010 that funds from an EDA grant “would pave the way for the creation of new jobs and business opportunities, which will strengthen the region’s economy,” according to a local East Texas NBC news affiliate. But now that the GOP plan to crash the economy on purpose is in full swing, Republicans are now calling for an end to the EDA.

22. Lower Taxes) Republican do support lower taxes, except they only support them for the wealthy, NOT for the rest of us. Even as they crusade to reduce or eliminate taxes on corporations and the wealthy, the GOP fully supports a new proposal that would actually raise taxes on the rest of us. And guess who is opposed to it? That’s right. President Brack Obama. Republicans usually crusaded for lower taxes for everyone, but since they support class warfare now, they have partly reversed themselves.

23. Medicare) I’m aware that Republicans initially opposed Medicare when it was passed, but since its passage into law, Republicans have largely defended it, especially when they try to pander to senior citizens for votes. But if the GOP really wanted to kill Medicare, they would have actually done it when Ronald Reagan was in office. Reagan opposed Medicare when it was created but then did something quite unexpected as President. He saved it. By saving Medicare, Republicans practically endorsed it. Even Theodore Roosevelt supported national health care. And now the GOP has come full circle once again by opposing it, and are trying to slaughter it, along with the millions of seniors that rely on the popular health care program. Why? Because President Obama is in favor of keeping Medicare around for a very long time and Medicare represents just how popular government-run universal health care can be. So technically speaking, Republicans were against Medicare before they were for it before they were against it.

24. Social Security) Social Security is popular with just about everyone, even the most staunch right wingers. Ronald Reagan and Milton Freidman supported the New Deal programs of the 1930′s and even Ayn Rand collected Social Security up to her dying breath. Ronald Reagan even saved this program too by raising payroll taxes. This action also saved Medicare as it is part of the Social Security Act. The idea to privatize Social Security has popped up many times but has been met with negative reactions by a majority of the people so those ideas usually die in infancy. President Bush wanted to privatize it, but never did. Republicans had control of Congress and the White House from 2001-2006. If they had wanted to kill Social Security, they would have done so. But now all of a sudden they feel now is the time to privatize it, even as big bankers have proven that they can’t be trusted with money. Oh, and President Barack Obama supports keeping Social Security intact. Just another reason for Republicans to hate it.

Undoubtedly, one could add even more to the list but now you know what policies Republicans once supported and why they are now against those very same policies. If we take Republican claims to love America and their claims that the Founders were Republicans seriously, we could also now say that Republicans were for America before they were against her.

53. What I'm trying to do...
Mon Aug 4, 2014, 06:10 AM
Aug 2014

It occurs to me that Republicans tend to blame Obama for stuff that every preceding President has done, and to by arm-waving and apocalyptic in the process. It's not just "I disagree with the ACA" (a Republican proposal), but that "I disagree with the ACA because it's the end of freedom and democracy."

Really?

Insurance reform?

From the Heritage Institute?

So I'm gathering those examples.

51. Breaking news: Republicans blast Obama for breathing.
Sun Aug 3, 2014, 10:24 PM
Aug 2014

Washington dc

Today lawmakers on the Hill blasted President Obama for breathing. The claim that his breathing is unPresidential and a distraction from the issues. Senator John McCain said , the President is begging us to impeach him over this breathing. Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Obama's breathing shows him to be weak and gives terrorists reasons to attack us. Speaker of the house John Boehner added that the American people don't want all this breathing. Rush Limbaugh added that Obama's breathing has racial overtones.Sarah Palin took to Twiiter saying that Obama's breathing reeks of socialism and part of the liberal media to portray Obama as human.

54. Obama and Normandy
Mon Aug 4, 2014, 08:58 PM
Aug 2014

This is a good one. Conservatives created a sacred tradition (which didn't exist) and then faulted Obama for not observing it (which he did).

The Tea Party Line (tm) is that every President since World War II has attended D-Day ceremonies in France -- except, of course, the traitorous Muslim who probably would have been on Hitler's side.

Prior to Ronald Reagan, NO PRESIDENT had ever attended ceremonies at Normandy. Only four presidents have done so, and one of those was Barack Obama. Reagan went for the 40th anniversary of the landing, Clinton attended the 50th anniversary, George W. Bush attended the 60th anniversary, and Obama went this past year for the 65th.

55. National Day of Prayer
Mon Aug 4, 2014, 09:40 PM
Aug 2014

This is a tricky one because despite the wall of separation between church and state, there are not one, but TWO, formally recognized prayer events.

The National Day of Prayer is the older, and now more radicalized version. It's always on the first Thursday in May, but for the past nearly 25 years, the Chair of the organization has been Shirley Dobson, the wife of celebrated bat-shit crazy hate-monger James Dobson. So you can imagine just how ecumenical the National Day of Prayer has become. Last year one member of Congress (who happens to be co-chair of the National Prayer Breakfast -- a totally different event) stormed out in the middle of Dobson's anti-abortion rant. And get this: Afterward none other than Louie Gohmert (LOUIE FREAKING GOHMERT) acknowledged that Dobson crossed a line.

Dobson, for his part, is pissed off that Obama only issues a proclamation but doesn't attend in person. That is, as nearly as I can tell, the tradition. The President issues a proclamation but doesn't (or rarely) attend in person. Reagan once held an event at the White House, as did George HW Bush. Only George W. Bush held events every year at the White House -- but notably did not attend the main event.

And if I were Obama, my proclamation would read: Screw You.

What Obama DOES attend is the National Prayer Breakfast, which was first organized in 1953 as the President's Prayer Breakfast. Even with the name change, it's still considered more of the President's gig, so he always attends. And note that some of the speakers at the National Prayer Breakfast have included Bono and Mother Teresa. So which party would you rather attend?

So basically right wing blames Obama for not attending the National Day of Prayer event in D.C. (they're also held across the country), citing this as evidence that he's a Christ-hating Muslim Atheist. But ignore that he regularly attends the National Prayer Breakfast.

I'd include a link to this, but I had to cull if from a number of sources.

56. Executive Orders
Tue Aug 5, 2014, 10:02 AM
Aug 2014

I found that, of all places, Wikipedia has a nice table of Presidents and their Executive Orders, and it appears to be updated pretty regularly.

In terms of sheer numbers, Obama has issued more E.O.'s than George H.W. Bush (183-166), but of course, Obama has been in office for two years longer. Compared to two-term Presidents, nobody in recorded U.S. History has issued fewer E.O.'s. By "recorded history" I mean that the numbering system did not start until the 20th century, and so it's probable that many 19th century Presidents issued more than has been retroactively documented. I find it hard to believe the Abraham Lincoln managed to fight the Civil War while issuing only 48 Executive Orders.

57. Benghazi
Tue Aug 5, 2014, 10:36 AM
Aug 2014

This is another painfully obvious one. There were 13 incidents where terrorists launched assaults on U.S. embassies or consulates during the Bush Administration -- that's not including the routine shelling that was directed against the U.S. Embassy in Iraq, situated inside the otherwise "safe" Green Zone. Not one of these attacks warranted even a mention from the Republicans in Congress, much less a two-year investigation.

Here's a link to a good article by Bob Cesda on the subject (and be sure to follow the link within the article where Cesca debunks the debunkers).
