Florida pastor draws more critics than supporters at Dearborn rally

Speaking in front of the biggest mosque in Michigan, the Florida pastor known for burning the Quran blasted Islam and called upon Americans to take back their country.

"Islam has one goal -- that is world domination," said Jones, wearing sunglasses, jeans and a faded black leather jacket. "It's time to stand up."

Holding signs that read "I Will Not Submit," about 20 supporters cheered as Jones and his assistant spoke outside the Islamic Center of America, a Dearborn mosque that sits off Ford Road.

Framed by the mosque's minarets, Jones said he is concerned that the growth of the Muslim population in metro Detroit and the U.S. will lead to the oppression of non-Muslims.

And maybe climb up the religious nutjob ladder. Isn't his ministry relatively well-off due to some sort of incestuous relationship with some car dealers or something there? Guess he's tasted a little bit of la dolce vita and wants some more.

Don't most religions have as an unstated goal, world domination? That's why they go out and recruit, insist that their government follow their religion, etc?

The Mosque should have held a get to know us neighborhood party with stuff for the kids, bake sale (which probably would have proven that American Muslims like to make sugar cookies and banana nut bread like everyone else), and info on leaflets for the adults.

The man has no actual support (which is why only 20 people at the protest) & no visible means of support.

Why does he get national press coverage and personal police protection? (Because the big phalanx of police were there to protect Jones, no mistake about it, v. e.g., the large contingents of police at Occupy events ready to arrest and intimidate the demonstrators.)

There's a lot of people putting really strange ideas out with unclear sources of income. Does anyone have any solid evidence that our government has STOPPED doing this?

DEARBORN — For all the hoopla, all the hand-wringing, and all the legal posturing, Terry Jones’ demonstration Saturday was decidedly quiet.

There were four distinct groups on hand, about 125 people at most combined: Police, media, counter-demonstrators, and the controversial Florida minister’s followers. The size of the various contingents, from largest to smallest, went in that order.

Seemingly absent from the crowd were Arabs and people in Islamic garb, perhaps a byproduct of the advisories local mosques put out this week advising congregants to stay away from the event.

While about 25 people with the Detroit-based activist group By Any Means Necessary were contained about a quarter mile away, media, Jones and his supporters gathered on a cordoned-off section of grass in front of the Islamic Center of America.

12. Frankly, Jones is an outsider

No one here thinks that our fellow Michiganders of the Islamic faith are any more problematic or any less American than the next guy.

He needs to go someplace else and stir up hate.

He's not needed in Michigan at all.
